Abstract

264,732. Dicker, S. G. S., (Pittsburgh Steel Drurn Co.). July 9, 1926. Metal casks; heads.-A metal shipping drum comprises a body 10 having its outer end 15 turned inwardly upon itself to form a reinforcing chime and bent inwardly towards the centre of the drum to form a double shoulder 17 which supports the head 24. A gasket 25 may be inserted between the shoulder 17 and the head 24. The head 24 is formed with a horizontal flange 22 corresponding with the shoulder 17 and a downwardly extending cylindrical portion 23. An annular bead 18 is rolled in the part 15 to facilitate bending the outer portion over the upstanding flange of the head, and the outer portion may be cut or notched longitudinally to facilitate bending. The closure at the other end of the drum is of the type in which the end of the body is closed over a downwardly depending flange on the head and the three thicknesses are bent inwardly towards the centre to form a support for the drum. The body is joined by a longitudinal rolled seam having adjacent stiffening beads, and may be radially corrugated as at 13.
