Abstract

Uniting by fusion.-To prevent bursting of the joints upon buckling of the ends or other damage being received by metal drums and the like, for paint, oil, &c., the ends are formed of inwardly dished form with inclined flat marginal flanges of a width at least one seventh of the diameter of the drum. Except in the case of kegs, where one end is detachably held in place by clips, both ends are secured to the burners by welding. Several ways of securing the ends to the drums are described, one being that shown in Fig. 4 according to which the marginal flange 2 of the end is formed with an upturned edge 3 which is heavily welded, by the employment of a thicker welding wire than usual, to the outwardly inclined rim 7 of the drum edge. For an end provided with a down-turned or " hooked " flange 4 the exterior weld 13 shown in Fig. 5 is suitable when the drum is plain-sided, or that shown in Fig. 6 when the drum body is grooved as at 11, the edge of the flange 4 being in this case opened either outwardly at 6 as shown or closed inwardly according as the groove 11 is internal or external. Fig. 7 shows an external hoop 12 also secured in place by the end weld, the opened out portion 6 being in this case intended to afford support to the hoop. The marginal flange 2 in each case is arranged preferably to make an angle of 45‹ with the walls of the drum.
