Description
Dec. 30, 1930. H. H. WARD METALLIC 'RECEPTACLE Filed March 26, 1926 Patented Dec. 3t 1930 PATENT "or-Flea mien n. wAnn, or CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA 4 METALLIC BECEZPTAGLE Application filed March 26, 1926. Serial No. 97,606.
My invention is a cask-like receptacle formed of sheet metal bent to form a curved body with ends or heads permanently fixed thereto, and provided with a flanged bung- 6 hole in the curved wall of the body surrounded by a re-enforcing plate conforming with the contour of the wall and preferably having a flange engaging the wall flange surrounding the bunghole. By securely fixing, as by "10 riveting or spot welding, such a re-enforcing fixed without danger of dislodgment or in 'jury to the receptacle. Thecharacteristic features and advantages of my improvement will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which Fig 1 is a broken top plan view of a barrel or drum embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a broken side elevation th'ereof; Fig. 3 is a broken end view of the structure shown inFigs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 showing the reaanforcing plate from the inside of the barrel.
As illustrated in the drawings, my improved receptacle comprises a curved body 1 trolled from sheet metal and preferably hav- 'ing the circumferential ridges -2 projecting radially therefrom. The ends of the body are closed by the circumferentially channeled heads 3, preferably permanently attached to the body as by crimping the edges of the heads over the flanged ends of the body.
A bunghole 4, forms in the curved wall of the body between the ribs 2, is surrounded by an integral wall flange 5. A re-enforcing.
out danger of distortion of the receptacle wall or dislodgement 0f the bung.
In the construction of such drums or barrels,-the re-enforcing plate may be attached to a sheet metal body blank, as by welding or riveting and the composite sheets rolled, apertured and flanged together.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1 1. A metallic cask-like receptacle comprising a curved wall containing a flanged aperture forming a smooth surfaced bunghole for a driven bung and a re-enforcing plate having a flanged aperture registerin with said bung hole and conforming with the contour of said wall. Y
2. A metallic cask-like receptacle containing a flanged aperture forming a smooth surfaced bunghole for a driven bung, and a reenforcing plate surrounding said bunghole and having a flange engaging the flange surrounding said aperture.
3. A closure element for metal barrels having bung holes, said closure element comprising a metallic sleeve provided by an inturned flange integral with the metal wall 'of the barrel and arranged at the bung hole and by areinforcing collar secured to the inner faceof the barrel and surrounding and reinforcing the flan e and extending beyond its end to present the end of the flange as a shoulder, said closure element adapted to receive a hung of dried wood which swelling when wet engages the shoulder and is protected againstsplintering off by the projecting part of the collar.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name this 22nd day' of March, 1926.
v HUGH H. WVARD.
plate 6, conforming with the contour of the curved wall v1, is permanently fixed to such wall and contains an aperture registering with the aperture 5 and surrounded by an integral flange 7 which engages and projects inward beyoild the edge of the inturned v flange 5. A bung or stopper8 may be driven home into such a re-enforced bunghole with-
