STEEL COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION 015' OHIO.
SHEET-METAL CRIME. I
Application filed February a, 1920. Serial No. 357,344.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon C. BRAINARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certaln new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Chimes, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to sheet metal barrels and more particularly to a sheet metal chime adapted to be used in connection with said barrel; the object of the invention being to provide an exceedingly simple and easily fabricated sheet metal chime and one whichcan be quickly and easily connected to the sheet metal barrel without the aid of special tools and when so connected thereto, will provide a strong and durable protective chime; and a still further object is to provide a sheet metal chime of such construction that a comparatively sharp edge can be provided which will facilitate the heading operation of the barrel, it being understood that this type of chime is particularly ada ted for use upon bilged barrels, although t e broad principle thereof could be utilized in connection with casks or drums.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a sheet metal barrel provided with my improved construction of chime; Fig. 2 1s an enlarged detail sectional view showing a corner of the barrel and the chime applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showin a ort'ion of one section of the chime; an =F1g. 4 is a similar view showing a portion of the other section of the chime.
Referring to the drawing, A indicates a bilged barrel formed of sheet metal, said barrel being constructed in accordance with my approved method. A sheet metal chime is applied to each endv of the barrel and in' practice I propose to make this chime in two sections rolled from sheet metal, one section B being in the form of a taper ring,
the narrow end thereof being rolled back as shown at B providing an inclined annular groove B The other section C is angled at G and the portion C thereof is bent at such an angle as to snugly fit into the inclined annular groove B The inner or smaller section C is fitted into the larger or outer section B by forcing the flange G? into the annular groove B and the parts can be connected by weldlng or any other method before being applied to the end of the barrel, or they canv be applied to the end of the barrel and then welded to each other and to the barrel. It is also obvious that the inner section could be connected to the barrel head and the outer section could then be applied to the inner section of the chime and forced upon the end of the barrel and then connected to both barrel and the inner section of. the chime. Thus, it will be seen that it is immaterial in what manner the various parts are connected so long as they are connected with each other and to the barrel head, and when such connection has once been completed, an exceedingly strong and durable chime will be provided and the rolled back edge of the outer section can be made sufficiently sharp to form an edge which will facilitate the heading of the bilged barrel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A sheet metal chime comprising two separate interengaging ring sections, one being adapted to contact with the side of a barrel and the other section with the head thereof.
2. A sheet metal chime comprising two separate interengaging ring sections, one being adapted to contact with the side of a barrel and the other section with the head thereof, said ring sections interengaging at a point beyond the end of the barrel.
31A chime adapted to be fitted to a barrel comprising a ring having a grooved portion, and an angular ring one portion of which is adapted to fit into the grooved portion of said first named ring, the projecting portions of said interlocked rings contacting respectively with the side and the head of a barrel.
4:. A chime adapted to be fitted to a barrel comprising a tapering ring having an inmeans connected with said tapering ring for terior groove at its narrow end, and a ring locking therings together. i
having a tapering flange adapted to fit into In testimon whereof, I hereunto afiix my 10 said groove. signature in t e presence of a witness.
5. A chime adapted to be fitted to a barrel GEORGE C. BRAINARD. comprising a tapering ring, a flanged ring Witness: arranged within the tapering ring and R. D. MOGK.
