This invention relates drums. f
It is the present practice to provide metal shippingdrums with beads at the end pora tions thereof about which similarly shaped flanges formed on the heads are rolled to form the completed sealed drum. In some mstances, one of the drum heads is provided with a relatively small central opemng covered b v a closure cap through which acces may be had to the interior of the drum-to remove the contents therefrom. The use of the closure caps refered to is impracticablewhen the drums are employed for shipping liquids owing to the diculty in e'ectually sealing the cap. and undensuch circumstances, it is necsary to remove one of the heads which can be done only by detaching the rolled ange thereof, thus mutilating the head and rendering it unfit for further use It also has been found diicult to seal the end 'ons of the body ofthe drum owing to e fact that the lips formed at the ends of the sheet comp v the F v of the drumto form an interl Seam. cannot be height of the sheet owing to the provision of .the beads previously referred to. Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body of the drum which is preferably formed of sheet metal of the proper gage according to the use to which the drum is to be put. Each end of the sheet of m fo fthe body of the drum is provided with suitably shaped extensions 11 which are adapted to be interlocked to form an ordinary interlocking seam 12. It will be apparent that the seam members cannot be extended throughout the height of the sheet forming the body of the drum, owing to the presence of the beads 13. The structure is such therefore that it is extremely difficult to provide a suitable head for the `drum which will prevent leakage of liquids between the ends of the beads 13, which lie substantially in contact with each other when the drum is assembled.
Referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4, the numeral 14 indicates a sealing clip as a whole which is substantially of an inverted J-shape, and comprises an outer metallic member 15 and an inner compressible member 16 preferably formed of rubber. The clip 14 is adapted to be placed in'position as indicated in Figure 2.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the numeral 17 designates one of the heads of the drum which is provided at its periphery with an annular flange 18 curved in cross-section to conform to the curvature of the bead 13 and clip 14. It will be` apparentthat the thicknesses of the elements comprising the clip are relatively exaggeratedin the drawings, the clip being suliiciently thin in the practical embodiment of the invention to permit the flange 18 readily to be placed in position over the end of the drum. The bead 13y is preferably substantially circular in cross-section, and it will be apparent from Figures 2 and 3 that the free edge of the flange 18, when in assembled position, extends slightly below the center line of the bead 13, as indicated at 19, for a purpose to be described.

The band 20 is curved in cross-section throughout a considerable portion of` its width, the skirt portion 21 of the band being substantially cylindrical before assembly bf the elements, as shown in Figure 2.

of the invention, the drum is provided with a head 22 similar .to the head 17 previously l described, except that it is provided with a ange- 23 of materially greater width than the iange 18. The flange 23 is normallv provided with a substantially cylindrica skirt The operation ofl the device is as follows: The body portion of the drum is assembled t in the usual manner by bringing together the seamelements 11 `and rolling them to form the seam 12. The seam elements may be welded together, if desired, to assure the provision of a leak-proof joint. When the body of the drum is thus assembled, it will be apparent that the end portions of the bead 13 will lie adjacent each other. The clip 14 is then placed in position, the wider portion of the clip being arranged externally of the drum, as shown in Figure 2. The clip bridges across the ends of the beads 13, as will be apparent, and after it has been so positioned, the head 17 is placed in position with the flange 18 arranged over the bead 13 and clip 14. The clamping band 20 is then slipped over the end of the drum, after which the skirt portions of the clip 14, flange 18 and band 20 are rolled inwardly as indicated in Figure 3. The outer edges of the metallic member 15 and compressible member 16 preferabl coincide before the rolling action takes p ace, as shown in Figures 2 and 4, and it will 'be apparentthat when the rolling action is performed, the' compressible member tendsV to elongate with respect to the metallic member of the clip,
owing to the difference in the cross sectional '15 then retains the member 16 under compression to eifect a leak-proof joint at the ends of the body adjacent the seam. The skirt of the clamping band is rolled around the bead 13 as shown in Figure 3, and effectually secures the head 17 to the bod: of the drum. ,The structure illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4 may be employed at both -ends of the drum, or it may be employed at one end with the modified form of.. the invention arranged at the opposite end. The operation of the modified form of the device will be referred to' later.
When the drum reaches the consumer, and it is desired to wholly or partially remove the contents of the drum, a screw driver or other similar implement is inserted beneath one edge of the clamping band 20 to permit the implement to slide therebeneath. Thus it will be apparent that the clamping'band readily may be ripped off, 'after which it is discarded. As previously stated, the edge 19 of the flange 18 extends a slight distance below the center of the bead 13 and thus will be frictionally retained in position, but the head readily may be removed merely by tapping upwardly against the edge 19. fI the contents of the drum are only partially removed, the remaining portions of the contents may be protected by placing the head upon the drum. The outer edge portion of the iange 18 will snap over thebead 13, thus retaining the headin position against accithe form of the invention illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, is identical with that previously described. In the modified form, however, the clamping band is eliminated and the bead 23 is widened whereby the skirt p0rt-ion thereof when rolled beneath the bead 13, will eifectually retain the head in position. The removal of the head may be effected by inserting a screw driver or similar implement beneath the edge thereof, and this action obviously bends and distorts the Bange of the head. This form of the invention is employed where the contents of the drums are entirely removed, thus rendering it unnecessary to utilize the head as means for protecting a portion of the contents of the drum. The sealing clip 14 operates in the manner previously described. and thus it will be apparent that both forms of the drum are adapted for the shipment of liqids since leakage of the latter is eifectually prevented. e
It is to be understood that the forms of the invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes inthe shape, size and ement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim 1. A shipping drum comprising a substantially cylindrical body having a bead extending around one end thereof. the ends of the Sheet forming said body being joined by a Seam extending toa point adjacent said bead, means for sealing the end of said body between the ends of said bead against 1eak` age, and a head closing the end of said body.
2. A shipping drum comprising a substantially cylindrical body having a bead extending around one end thereof, the ends of the sheet forming said body being joined by a vseam extending to a point adjacent said bead, a clip bridging across the end portions of said `bead and extending therebeneath, and a head closing the end of said body.
3. A shipping drum comprising a substantially cylindrical body having a bead extending around one end thereof, the ends of the sheet, forming said body being joined by a seam extending to a point adjacent said bead', a clip bridging facross the end portions of and extending around said bead. said clip including an inner compressible member, and a head closing the end of said body.
