Abstract
340,148. Ferrand, G. A. Feb. 1, 1929, [Convention date]. Metal tubes.-A mild steel &c. tube 1 is strengthened by hoops 2 which are secured to the tube by cold expansion of the latter and are disposed sufficiently close to each other as to avoid any buckling or corrugating of the tube. The hoops are formed of steel having an elastic limit decidedly higher than that of the metal of the tube, and are fitted over the tube in the cold and with the smallest possible clearance. The whole is then submitted to a progressively increasing internal pressure by which the tube is expanded beyond its elastic limit and until the stress induced in the hoops is decidedly higher than that in the body of the tube.
