Antizionism

Mit dem Antiimperialismus und insbesondere mit dem "Antizionismus" wurde nicht nur eine Arbeiterklasse nationalisiert, sondern es wurden umgekehrt "nationale Bewegungen" und so genannte nationale Entitäten 'klassifiziert', als Ganzes einer Position im weltweiten "Klassenkampf" zugeordnet [...]. In ihrem eigenen Vokabular war das Ausblenden gesellschaftlicher Widersprüche innerhalb von "Nationen" "volksgemeinschaftlich", und im "antizionistischen" Antiimperialismus wurde der Abschied von der Kritik von innergesellschaftlichen Konflikten und Klassen unumkehrbar. So wurde gerade der "Internationalismus" der KPD nationalistisch und antisemitisch.

In der späten Habsburgermonarchie identifizierten sich bereits weite Bevölkerungsteile mit Nationalitätenkonzepten. Die Regierung hatte zuvor durch Sprachklassifikationen und -standardisierungen einen erheblichen Beitrag zur Herausbildung von Nationalitäten geleistet. Die Bewegung des politischen Zionismus forderte die Anerkennung von Jüd*innen als Nationalität. In der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie widmete man sich der „Nationalitätenfrage“. Die zionistische Bewegung hingegen wurde in der sozialdemokratischen Arbeiter-Zeitung entweder nicht wahrgenommen oder offenkundig verachtet. In mehreren Artikeln wurde auf antisemitische Vorurteile, wie den „geldgierigen Juden“, zurückgegriffen. Die zionistische Zeitung Jüdische Volksstimme kritisierte diese Haltung und Praxis in zahlreichen Beiträgen des Analysezeitraums 1900-1910. Ein häufiger Vorwurf lautete, dass die Sozialdemokratie die „Judenfrage“ und den wachsenden Antisemitismus ignorieren würde. Sozialdemokrat*innen, die ursprünglich aus jüdischen Familien stammten, sich aber assimilierten und taufen ließen (Victor Adler bspw.), wurde vorgeworfen an „jüdischem Selbsthass“ zu leiden. In der Arbeiter-Zeitung reagierte man nicht auf die Kritik der Jüdischen Volksstimme. Die Diskussion über das Verhältnis von Sozialismus und Zionismus wurde in der Jüdischen Volksstimme sehr intensiv geführt, während sich die Arbeiter-Zeitung damit nicht befasste. In der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie hielt man an der Hoffnung fest, dass sich der Antisemitismus durch den Sozialismus und die Assimilierung von Jüd*innen aufheben würde. Ziel der Arbeit ist es jüdische Identitätsdiskurse, die das Verhältnis der zionistischen Bewegung und der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie der späten Habsburgermonarchie umspannen, anhand der Zeitungen Jüdische Volksstimme und Arbeiter-Zeitung aufzuzeigen.

Dans l’un de mes articles consacré aux circonstances de la dissolution - aussi subite qu’inexpliquée -, par le Saint-Siège, dans les années 1920, de l’association sacerdotale « Amici Israel » (Amis d’Israël) , j’avais dûment documenté l’état d’esprit ecclésial hostile aux sionistes établis en Palestine. La raison pour laquelle je reproduis aujourd’hui quelques extraits de mon étude d’alors est la consonance frappante entre cet événement, qui remonte à un siècle, et un autre, tout récent , dont voici quelques détails significatifs.

Les cinq jours de rencontres et de colloques se sont ainsi tenus dans le contexte du récent décès de Shireen Abu Aqleh, journaliste chrétienne palestinienne, abattue dans la ville de Jénine le 11 mai dernier. Citant les paroles du patriarche Pizzaballa, selon lequel «il est de notre droit et notre devoir de chrétiens de soutenir l’ouverture et l’universalité de la ville », les évêques de la Coordination de Terre Sainte rappellent que «la communauté chrétienne est essentielle pour l’identité de Jérusalem, à la fois maintenant et à l’avenir». Sa présence permanente est pourtant menacée par l’occupation et l’injustice […] et «beaucoup de ceux que nous avons rencontrés doivent faire face à la violence et à l’intimidation des groupes de colons, à des restrictions à leur liberté de mouvement ou à la séparation de leurs familles en raison du statut qui leur est accordé» […]

The campaign analyzed in this study began as an anti-Israeli policy but quickly turned into an anti-Jewish campaign, and this evident anti-Jewish character remained its distinctive feature.

It developed in two acts. In the summer of 1967, the Cold War and subordination to Moscow caused the communist leaders of Poland take the Arab side in the distant conflict in the Near East. The inhabitants of Poland were supposed to follow in the steps of their rulers, thus an anti-Israeli propaganda campaign was unleashed, mobilizing the masses to express the expected opinions and feelings against Israel and its Western allies. The political police monitored non-conformist attitudes and informed the leaders that Polish Jews sympathized with Israel. Władysław Gomulka, the communist party leader, stigmatized them for this crime, and the first punishments began to fall. Those who had previously sought to deal with the Jews, a number of them concentrated in particular in the Security Service of the Ministry of Interior (MSW), felt that their moment approached.

The events of the spring of 1968, known in Poland as the March events, had a much more extensive scope and greater drama than the first act. In reaction to student protests and the ferment among intellectuals, who had been increasingly frustrated by restrictions on freedoms, censorship and withdrawal from the reforms Gomułka had promised when taking power in 1956, the authorities unleashed a large-scale hate campaign. Among the alleged internal enemies the campaign attacked, Zionists appeared in first place. In just a few days the anti-Zionist propaganda reached its apogee, masses were mobilized against the enemies, hate sessions organized throughout the country, and a purge begun. Simultaneously, an unclear intra-party struggle was going on behind the scenes. The campaign was officially terminated in July 1968, although its deceleration had begun earlier. Its most significant aftereffect, a wave of mass Jewish emigration, lasted for many months afterwards, taking away some 15,000 people, i.e. half of the Jeewish community in Poland.

inconsistencies concerning the so-called «Jewish Question», Zionism, «anti-Zionism» and Israël /Palestine The following texts were written in 2012 and 2014, and slightly modified for their translation. They criticize two books on the cover of which appears Alain Badiou's name. In reality, however, neither of these books is a real one, if by that word, we mean a scholarly study, based on reliable historical sources, and dealing with antisemitism, Zionism and the so-called «Jewish question 1 ». The first one, Antisemitism Everywhere, is an article printed in large letters to turn it into an editorial product that could pass for a «book». The second is a collection of articles, interviews and excerpts of texts. Alain Badiou has the reputation of being a «great Marxist philosopher». I am unqualified to judge his philosophical talent as my philosophical knowledge is quite limited. And I am not interested in labeling who is a «great Marxist» and who is not. I leave this job to Marxologists. In these two texts I have merely tried to show that Alain Badiou, by venturing into the realm of politics and history, says and writes a lot of nonsense, partly because he has not the proper knowledge to deal with historical and political facts (I could say the same thing about what he writes on China even he is a Maoist, because his ideological positions oblige him to discard or ignore basic facts). Hence my polemical and irreverent tone when faced with the texts of an intellectual who uses his authority acquired in the philosophical (and mediatic) 1 As noted by Danny Trom, in his book La promesse et l'obstacle (Editions du Cerf, 2007), one should establish a difference between the «Jewish question» (an expression wrongly used by many left-wing theoreticians) and «the Jewish problem». For DannyTrom, the «Jewish question» should describe the discussions among Jews themselves when they question their religious, cultural, political identities. What most leftwing militants call the «Jewish question» should be more accurately called the «Jewish problem» as Jews are a problem (and not a question) for conscious (or unconscious) anti-Semites and anti-Zionists. Trom skillfully turns the perspective around: he attacks those who don't understand «Jewish realities» ; those who are uncomfortable with Jewishness and Judaism because they do not fit into their small ideological boxes; or, to put it another way, those who consider Jews to be a problem (but do not dare to say it), a problem which they would like to «solve». Marx led the way with his article on The Jewish Question in which he explained Jews would disappear if they accepted to assimilate themselves into democratic bourgeois society. Many other Marxists followed this path since 1844, but history took a radically different course from their theories. The creation of the State of Israel in 1948 and today's left-and rightwing «Zionists» have thus only complicated the task of those who wish to see a world free of Jewish identities, whether religious, political (the State of Israel or Zionist associations) and/or cultural.

the Jaffa-based newspaper Filastin in the
first years of its publication, 1911–1914.
During this short time span, the opinions
published by the editors showed a profound
metamorphosis. At the beginning, their stance
could be described as cautious neutrality
with a guardedly favorable perception of
Zionist colonization. However, in the months
leading to World War I, Filastin had become
an unequivocally anti-Zionist newspaper
that warned its readers about the political
ambitions of the Zionists and the looming
threat of losing Palestine to them.

Raul Hilberg, der Doyen der Holocaust-Forschung, meinte einmal, er misstraue den großen Fragen. Daher untersuche er nicht, warum die Nazis die Juden ermordet haben, sondern wie sie es taten. Damit vermied Hilberg zum einen jegliche Form der Rationalisierung des Massenmordes, zum anderen trug er durch die präzise Analyse des "Wie" indirekt auch zur Beantwortung des "Warum" bei. Die Antisemitismusforschung hat sich seit den siebziger Jahren, von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen, daran orientiert und so liegen die Innovationen in diesem Feld eher im Bereich der Regional-und Einzelstudien. Mit dem Aufkommen eines sogenannten "Neuen Antisemitismus", der sich vor allem gegen den jüdischen Staat Israel richtet, haben die tagespolitischen Auseinandersetzungen über den Begriff des Antisemitismus allerdings merklich zugenommen und immer öfter landet die Frage, ob etwas antisemitisch sei oder nicht, sogar vor Gericht. Die Forschung reagiert nun, etwas verspätet, auf diese Entwicklungen, indem wieder verstärkt theoretische Analysen vorgelegt werden. Zuletzt hat etwa Kenneth L. Marcus, der bezeichnenderweise kein Historiker, sondern Rechtswissenschaftler ist, eine bemerkenswerte Studie mit dem Titel The Definition of Anti-Semitism vorgelegt, in der er begründet, warum auch manche Formen der "Israelkritik" als antisemitisch bzw. antijüdisch zu charakterisieren seien. [1] In diesem Kontext ist auch das neue Buch Anti-Judaismus des Mediävisten David Nirenberg zu beleuchten, an dem dieser laut eigener Aussage ein ganzes Jahrzehnt gearbeitet hat. Das ist dem Buch anzumerken, sowohl was den umfangreichen Anmerkungsapparat, als auch was den weiten räumlichen und zeitlichen Horizont betrifft, den Nirenberg zumeist souverän behandelt. Das Buch besteht aus dreizehn Kapiteln und ist weitgehend chronologisch gegliedert, beginnend im antiken Ägypten und sich Seite für Seite bis ins 20. Jahrhundert fortarbeitend. Erwähnenswert ist zudem, dass Nirenberg ausdrücklich die islamische Welt in die "Geschichte des westlichen Denkens" einbezieht. Mit diesem Untertitel ist auch bereits die Richtung vorgegeben: Nirenberg schreibt explizit keine jüdische Geschichte des Antisemitismus, sondern versteht den Anti-Judaismus als Denkkonzept, als epistemisches Muster, das der westlichen Weltdeutung zugrunde liege.

Wenn Hass auf Juden verbindet: Querfront-Phänomene in der Schweiz Im Antisemitismus und in einem antisemitisch inspirierten Antizionismus finden rechtsextreme, linksextreme und islamistische Gruppierungen und Personen immer wieder zusammen. Als Querfronten werden Bündnisse beschrieben, die zwischen Gruppierungen geschlossen werden, die sich auf entgegengesetzten Polen des politischen Spektrums ansiedeln. In der Regel wird darunter die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Links-und Rechtsextremisten beschrieben. Solche Bündnisse werden in der Regel nicht offen geschlossen, sondern sind informeller Natur, zum Beispiel in der rhetorischen Unterstützung oder in der gemeinsamen Ausrichtung von Demonstrationen.

La gauche radicale et le problème juif 1 » de Danny Trom Habituellement, les antisionistes radicaux 2 sont accusés d'être des antisémites, et, quand ils sont Juifs 3 , on leur assène qu'ils seraient victimes de la fumeuse «haine de soi». L'intérêt principal du livre de Danny Trom est de déplacer la discussion sur un terrain plus complexe : certains trous béants dans les murailles des théories révolutionnaires suite à l'échec de toutes les révolutions sociales au XX e siècle, et les tentatives maladroites, voire funestes, d'y remédier. Selon lui, la «gauche radicale» a changé de paradigme en adoptant un cadre de pensée victimaire, en utilisant de nouveaux concepts dont celui d'«exclus» (j'ajouterai celui de «sans-...») en renonçant à toute philosophie de l'histoire et à toute interprétation scientifique de la réalité sociale. C'est ce changement de modèle de pensée qui, selon Trom, pousse la «gauche radicale» à emprunter avec ferveur la voie semée d'embûches de l'antisionisme et parfois à s'embourber dans certains chemins de traverse antisémites ou négationnistes. Ces hypothèses méritent pour le moins d'être discutées, quitte à être réfutées. En fait de «gauche radicale», ce livre ne traite pas des écrits de l'extrême gauche, mais d'auteurs fort éloignés des cercles militants dans leur vie quotidienne et qui ont fait carrière dans le champ intellectuel. Universitaires pour la plupart, ces «radicaux de la chaire» sont d'ailleurs régulièrement sollicités et cités par Le Monde diplomatique, ce mensuel gaullo-citoyenniste et par les revues réservées aux intellectuels de gauche. L'auteur détecte des convergences fortes qui forgent «l'esprit du temps», c'est-à-dire les diverses idéologies dominantes à gauche. Il mentionne brièvement, ou de façon plus détaillée, les thèses de Terray, Cécile Winter et même un revenant, compagnon de route du tiersmondisme, l'auteur de théâtre Jean Genet ! Tout un chapitre est également consacré aux interprétations du nazisme (apparemment opposées mais en fait complémentaires, selon Trom) de Christopher Browning (Des hommes ordinaires : Le 101 e bataillon de réserve de la police allemande et la Solution finale en Pologne, Tallandier, 2002) et de Daniel Goldhagen (Les Bourreaux volontaires de Hitler. Les Allemands ordinaires et l'Holocauste, Points Seuil, 1997). Sur le plan politique, l'auteur semble assez conservateur. Il observe les militants du haut de sa tour d'ivoire, ou plutôt il ne distingue que leurs supposés mentors idéologiques. Son élitisme condescendant transparaît dans des affirmations tranchées comme : – «le sujet de la révolution, auquel le geste militant était rivé, est venu à se déliter, voire à disparaître» ; – «la gauche radicale politique 4 évoque plutôt l'image d'un enfant à qui un Meccano sophistiqué est soustrait et qui, faisant feu de tout bois, continue à faire comme si se poursuivait le même jeu» ; 1 Cerf, 2007. 2 L'historien Joel Kotek appelle «antisionistes radicaux» ceux qui dénient à Israël le droit d'exister (cf. sa conférence «Contemporary Overview of Antisemitism in France and Belgium» à l'ISGAP en 2017, disponible sur Internet). Les antisionistes tout court étant, pour lui, ceux qui critiquent, même durement, la politique des gouvernements israéliens, démarche parfaitement légitime à ses yeux. 3 Est juif (avec une minuscule) toute personne qui se reconnaît dans le judaïsme (la religion) ; est Juif (avec une majuscule) tout individu qui se considère membre du peuple juif pour des raisons culturelles, historiques, identitaires ou... religieuses. Die Dialektik aus Beständigkeit und Wandel antisemitischer Ideologie drückt sich in der Verschiebung einzelner Elemente des Antisemitismus vor dem Hintergrund gesellschaftlicher und politischer Transformationen aus. In unserem Artikel untersuchen wir, wie sich Antisemitismus in einer kosmopolitischen Umgebung wie den Vereinten Nationen transformiert. Kernideologem ist dabei der Ausschluss Israels aus einer als homogen imaginierten Welt-gemeinschaft. Mittels einer Dokumentenanalyse der UN-Weltkonferenz gegen Rassismus 2009 (Durban II) und ihrer Vorbereitungstreffen zeigen wir fünf zentrale Topoi dieses kos-mopolitisch gewendeten Antisemitismus auf: die Fixierung auf Israel als alleinig schuld-tragend am Nahostkonflikt, die Delegitimierung jüdischer Staatlichkeit, die Gleichsetzung Israels mit dem Nationalsozialismus, der Mythos einer jüdischen Weltverschwörung sowie die Kaperung jüdischer Holocausterinnerung.

It is not entirely in agreement with what I may think on some issues but this presentation – in English first and in French second – is primordial to understand how France and the world are going awry right now.

This document which is in Open Access (originally published by Mediapart, http://blogs.mediapart.fr/blog/daniel-horowitz/240714/edwy-plenel-et-sa-lettre-au-president) only concerns the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza but it could be widened to the conflict between Israel and Palestine, but it could also be valid for the world at large for other conflicts and points of tension that have been dealt with by the West with an obvious bias for one side, even if it is the losing side, and then reverting their failed support into hate for the winner, no matter what the stakes of the said conflict may be.

The best case in that line is the hostility of the West against the legal government of Sri Lanka because they ended up in three years a terrorist conflict that had been going on for thirty years on their territory. The west had always supported LTTE – and then the fuzzy and fluid “Tamils” when LTTE was classified a terrorist organization by UN and most countries in the world – against the government of Sri Lanka.

Instead of helping to find a solution in a conflict, at times as old as several centuries, the West takes one side and then blows on the embers and burning coals for the fire to catch and topple over the side they have not chosen.

This has to stop, this has to come to an end. The West is not the biased umpire of the world, in fact the biased cop(per) of all nations and continents.

A propos du livre de Maxime Rodinson Peuple juif ou problème juif ? Ce compte rendu est le deuxième de la série inaugurée par une critique de Réflexions sur la question juive de Jean-Paul Sartre (cf. http://npnf.eu/spip.php?article879). Il n'aborde pas le contenu du principal texte de Peuple juif ou problème juif ? («Israël, fait colonial», qui occupe presque un tiers du livre), dans la mesure où cette série d'articles ne concerne pas la critique du nationalisme juif (du sionisme), des gouvernements israéliens et du colonialisme israélien, critique menée de façon particulièrement incisive, subtile et approfondie par Maxime Rodinson dans ce recueil, et dont devraient s'inspirer beaucoup d'antisionistes en ce XXI e siècle. Mon propos est autre : il s'agit de montrer à quel point les intellectuels et les militants de gauche et d'extrême gauche francophones (y compris Maxime Rodinson) ont toujours eu du mal à comprendre l'antisémitisme et la prétendue «question juive», contrairement à d'autres pays où certains militants ont réussi à dépasser le discours marxiste simpliste sur l'antisémitisme et à nous fournir des armes théoriques pour combattre ce fléau. La revue Ni patrie ni frontières et les sites mondialisme.org et npnf.eu ont déjà publié plusieurs traductions pour illustrer ce fossé théorique et politique entre la France et d'autres pays, en faisant connaître les contributions de Marcel Stoetzler,

Antisemitische Äußerungen von AfD-, Pegida- oder IB-Protagonist_innen zu finden, ist keine besondere Schwierigkeit. Oftmals werden sie in der kritischen Öffentlichkeit benutzt, um insbesondere der AfD nachzuweisen, dass sie dem nationalsozialistischen Ungeist verhaftet bleibe. Die Partei selbst wiederum bemüht sich – wenig entschlossen – diese Äußerungen als Einzelfälle darzustellen und manchmal auch zu sanktionieren (vgl. z.B. Soldt 2018). In diesem Aufsatz soll es darum gehen, das hinter diesen ‚Einzelfällen‘ liegende Muster zu beschreiben und zu untersuchen, wie dieses mit den breiteren, politische Lager überlappenden, Diskursen über die nationalsozialistische Vergangenheit Deutschlands zusammenhängt. Es wird die These entwickelt, dass die Tabuisierung, auf welcher die Kommunikationslatenz des Antisemitismus (Bergmann & Erb 1986) als Bestandteil der kulturellen Atmosphäre der Bundesrepublik jahrzehntelang beruhte und die das offene Wiederanknüpfen an die völkisch-antisemitische Ideologie des Nationalsozialismus im politischen Raum verhinderte, mittlerweile an Kraft verliert und dass dies durch die Art der ‚Vergangenheitsaufarbeitung‘ mitverursacht ist.

Der vorliegende Beitrag beleuchtet die Verbindungen des Ministeriums für Staatssicher-heit (MfS) der DDR zum westdeutschen Rechtsterrorismus und unterzieht den bisherigen Forschungsstand einer kritischen Revision. Vielmehr ist davon auszugehen, dass ein Bündel an Motiven eine Rolle spielte: Neben der Absicht, sich vor rechtsterroristischen An-griffen zu schützen und dem Bestreben, die Bundesrepublik als faschistisch zu diskreditieren, sind auch ideologische Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen der Stasi und den von ihr Beobachteten hervorzuheben. Am Beispiel der Rechtsterroristen Udo Albrecht und Odfried Hepp wird ge-zeigt, dass das MfS einen aktiven Teil zum rechten Terror in der Bundesrepublik beitrug-im Namen eines gemeinsam geteilten antiimperialistischen Antizionismus.

On the one hand, refugees are under fire from a growing radical right. At the same time, those refugees, many of whom come from countries where antisemitism is a social norm, have put Germany’s Jewish population in a trying situation. The Central Council of Jews in Germany has been at the forefront of those arguing for opening the borders to refugees. But many Jews are also worried about the mind-set of the refugees and fear that Germany might import the problems France faces with radical Muslims. The number of Jews leaving France because of antisemitism and the tense security situation there has been growing for years. 
The current state of affairs challenges not only Germany’s and Europe’s security agencies but their politics as well. German interior minister Thomas de Maizière insists, “Everyone who comes here must know what we stand for: This country has a special commitment to the Jews and to the state of Israel. This country has a very good reason to protect Jewish life and encourage its free expression. This country is a place where Jews should never again have to live in fear of persecution.”  De Maizière’s need to proclaim what should be self-evident—that Germany protects all its citizens, including Jews—indicates that Jews are in an especially vulnerable situation. To confront the problem and danger of antisemitism, proclamations on all political levels that denounce antisemitism are helpful. Yet in most cases, the media filters and comments on political rhetoric. With this function comes power and responsibility. The media does not simply collect and present information and opinion; it shapes opinion, offers perspectives, and sets the boundaries of what can and cannot legitimately be said about certain issues. This reality gives the media discourse on Jewish issues and antisemitism special relevance.

A l'exception de deux personnes (Pierre Stambul et Brigitte Stora) l'auteur n'a interviewé que des Juifs qui n'aiment pas (voire qui détestent) la gauche et même l'extrême gauche en raison de leurs positions critiques envers Israël et de leur cécité devant la montée de l'antisémitisme en France, depuis la séquestration et le meurtre d'Ilan Halimi en 2006 et les assassinats de 3 enfants et d'un adulte à l'école Ozar Hatorah en 2012. De plus, les introductions de l'auteur qui précèdent chaque interview contiennent beaucoup d'affirmations péremptoires, non appuyées sur des travaux historiques ou de science politique. C'est dommage car le sujet du livre était a priori intéressant : recueillir les opinions d'un panel de « Français juifs » à propos de l'évolution de leur situation durant les vingt dernières années, panel choisi parmi celles et ceux qui sont pratiquants mais aussi d'autres qui ont un lien plus ou moins étroit avec la culture juive, voire aucun lien avec celle-ci. Hélas, même lorsque l'auteur interviewe des individus qui auraient pu nous communiquer quelques réflexions utiles, leurs propos ne vont guère plus loin qu'une brève interview à la télévision ou à la radio durant laquelle la personne interrogée reste à la surface de sa réflexion ou de son témoignage de vie, aussi poignant soit-il.

Since the late 1950s, Third World nationalism in Algeria, Vietnam, and the Middle East had fascinated radical Québec nationalists. Québec nationalism’s militant arm, the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ), styled itself as a national-liberation movement fighting against Anglo-Canadian exploitation and oppression. After the Six-Day-War, the PLO became a significant source of inspiration for these elements. Québec was their Palestine, as one prominent Québec Nationalist asserted.
This militant Québec nationalism coincided and often overlapped with the rise of the New Left at Québec’s universities and in its unions. Like its European and American counterparts, the Québec New Left adopted the ideologies of anti-imperialism and anti-Zionism, and in 1972, the Québec-Palestine Association was established in this milieu. Anti-imperialism combined the Marxist analysis of class struggle
with a nationalistic worldview, which saw the world divided between oppressor and oppressed nations. For the New Left, Israel became the epitome of an oppressor nation. It was associated with all the supposed vices of the West: Racism, capitalism, inauthenticity, and militarism. This paper sheds light on the founding years of the Québec anti-Zionist movement in the early 1970 and discusses the themes and images it used to describe Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Furthermore, the
paper investigates whether these articulations a genuine critique of Zionism and Israeli policies or whether they were, instead, a reflection of antisemitic stereotypes. Moreover, the paper compares Québec anti-Zionism to parallel manifestations of New Left anti-Zionism in Germany, asking whether the cultural context in Québec affected the message of anti-Zionism.

The Left, the Right, Christians and Muslims-are they antisemitic and how do they compare? In what way anti-Israelism and other political convictions are related to the contemporary antisemitism? This paper provides numerical answers to these questions in the context of Great Britain-a low-antisemitism country.

Our study analyses the extent of antisemitic incidents in West and North Europe and their links to immigration, covering France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. According to the majority of media analyses and statistics concerning the countries covered in the study, the extent of antisemitism and the number of antisemitic incident are on the rise. The number of incidents has been increasing in the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark since the outbreak of the migration crisis, while the Netherlands-following several moderations-witnessed a relatively high number in 2017 compared to previous years. As regards to the background of perpetrators, a significant part of them come from the immigrant community. It can be assumed that the actual number of such incidents is somewhat or much higher in practically all countries.

The aim of the paper is, referring to the content of the Tiesa daily and documents kept in the Lithuanian Special Archives, to prove the statement that the image of Jews, created by Soviet propaganda, could have been aimed at inspiring anti-Semitism in public discourse. There was a close link between the anti-Zionist and anti-I srael campaigns carried out in the Soviet Union; Zionism, the ruling ideology of Israel, was presented as a tool used by imaginary and “hidden” powerful forces of international imperialism. After the Six Day Arab-I sraeli War in 1967 Israel’s aggressive and expansionary policy and Zionism became
a dominant theme in the Soviet media. Soviet propaganda tried to show that the Soviet Union was not against Jews, that its hatred was directed only towards Israel and Zionism. Criticism of Zionism and Israel as a Jewish state could have inspired hostility towards Jews and provoked anti-Semitism in part of the public. Ideological commentaries on the events in the Middle East, implications that “Jews are enemies and aggressors”, doubts over their loyalty to the USSR prevailed in Soviet propaganda. Anti-Semitism was demonstrated in many articles, Israel was shown as an aggressor, instrument of the US, enemy of socialism.
Articles presenting another opinion were eliminated from public discourse, efforts were made to force society to accept official opinion.

Antisemitism, anti-Zionism and alleged ille
gitimate criticism of Israel as well
as the relations between these concepts
are pressing phenomena that need to be
discussed theoretically and to be researched empirically. It may seem a little out-
dated to discuss them solely from an implicitly
comparative
angle, which forms the
basis of the presentations at this confer
ence, considering all the debates on transna-
tionalisation, global history, post colonialism, histoire croissée and so on. Focus-
sing on national states always runs the risk of reproducing “holistic nationalist
clichés”, as Koopmans and Statham (2000:31)
put it. Yet, there is no moral or
conceptual common ground (Rabinovici et al., 2004; Zuckermann, 2005) in the
discussion, and the forms these discussions
take differ noticeably between countries
(Ullrich, 2010, 2008). One can hardly overestimate the significance of nation
states, or more precisely of nationally
organized institutional settings and media
publics (Baumgarten, 2014). They are, among other things, important
discursive
context structures
(Ullrich and Keller, 2014) for antisemitic discourses, and they
are especially important for the social dealings with antisemitism, societal reactions
or debates on the phenomena in question. This is especially the case for Germany,
for fundamentally obvious reasons.
The paper has two major parts, both of which deal with the keywords of this
conference’s title. First, I highlight current
phenomena
of antisemitism, antisemitic
anti-Zionism and criticism of Israel in
Germany. Second, I focus on the ongoing
debates and controversies – or, to follow th
e title of this conference, the “conflicts”
in this area.

Holocaust education has been one of the great failures of our time.  The more students are taught about the holocaust, the more they see a resemblance between Israel and Nazi Germany.  'Holocaustology' has been chasing demons - turning 'jolocaust-denial" into a sin greater than antisemitism itself, and blinding us to the insincerity of holocaust-deniers. More recently, some have assaulted the "dual genocide theory" - which aims to forbid any comparison between the butchery of Lenin and Stalin and that of Hitler.  The denunciation of such comparisons puts Jews shamefully on the side of neo-totalitarians and historical deniers.    Jews need to find their way out of the moral swamp into which their naive belief that 'memory' alone will save them.

is a cowardly individual but a more or less skilful tactician. He does not want to appear as an avowed "negationist" as we say in French, a nostalgic of Nazism or fascism. He therefore has various techniques for hiding and trolling effectively in the cyberspace. This text was written after spotting and confronting such an individual on academia.edu website, in the context of a discussion about French Holocaust deniers and their peculiarities. But I think this is a much more widespread attitude, which cannot be reduced to this despicable academic whose name I will not even quote. P.S. : The use of the "Canada Dry" metaphor in my title alludes to a famous advertisement for that brand ("it has the colour of alcohol, the taste of alcohol, but contains no alcohol") and in no way implies that there is, at least as far as I know, the slightest commercial or political link between this beverage and Holocaust deniers. :=)

El estudio de las comunidades judías en tierras del Imperio otomano ha sido una de las parcelas de investigación más y mejora visitadas. Desde 1299, año en que se constituye, hasta 1923 en el que se proclama la República de Turquía, los judíos siempre participaron en el devenir del Imperio desarrollando lazos económicos muy relevantes con las grandes potencias del momento. Sin duda, su período de mayor esplendor fue entre los siglos XIX y XX en el que los judíos vivieron una época de revitalización sin precedentes coincidiendo con la desmembración del Imperio, pero en el que también hubieron de afrontar la aparición del sionismo político que, por otra parte, no fue acogido de buen grado por todos ellos y cuya repercusión en la prensa fue diaria. En estas páginas abordaremos el debate nacido en dos periódicos, L’ Aurore y El Tiempo, cuyos posicionamientos pro-sionistas y anti-sionistas llevaron a sus directores, Lucien Sciuto y David Fresco, a una batalla dialéctica que llegó a los tribunales.

Un négationniste «Canada Dry» est un individu lâche mais un tacticien plus ou moins habile. Il ne veut pas apparaître comme un «négationniste» déclaré, un nostalgique du nazisme ou du fascisme. Il dispose donc de différentes techniques pour se cacher et troller efficacement dans le cyberespace. Ce texte a été écrit après avoir repéré et affronté un tel individu sur le site (majoritairement anglophone) academia.edu dans le cadre d'une discussion sur les négationnistes français et leurs particularités. Mais je pense qu'il s'agit là d'une attitude beaucoup plus répandue, qui ne peut être réduite à cet universitaire méprisable pour lequel je ne ferai aucune publicité en citant son nom ou ses articles. L'utilisation de la métaphore «Canada Dry» dans mon titre fait allusion à une publicité célèbre de cette marque («il a la couleur de l'alcool, le goût de l'alcool, mais ne contient pas d'alcool») et n'implique nullement qu'il y ait, du moins à ma connaissance, le moindre lien commercial ou politique entre ce breuvage et les négationnistes. :=)
