Im April 1952 lud die Zeitschrift Jewish Life zu einer Veranstaltung in den großen Ballsaal des New Yorker Hotels Diplomat. Aus Anlass des neunten Jahrestags des Aufstands im Warschauer Getto wurden Ansprachen gehalten, Gedichte rezitiert, Tänze aufgeführt. 1 Ein jüdischer Jugendchor sang Lieder. Als Hauptredner war mit W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) einer der bekanntesten schwarzen Bürgerrechtler der Vereinigten Staaten eingeladen worden. Der wenige Jahre nach dem Ende des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs geborene Soziologe hatte sich bereits früh für die Rechte der schwarzen Bevölkerung eingesetzt. 2 Seine Bedeutung für die Herausbildung des Civil Rights Movement und eines schwarzen Selbstbewusstseins kann kaum überschätzt werden. Er war an der Entstehung der Niagara-Bewegung ebenso beteiligt wie an der Gründung der National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), der bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Bürgerrechtsorganisation der Vereinigten Staaten. Auch wenn sich Du Bois' Positionen im Laufe seines Lebens veränderten, grenzte er sich innerhalb der Bürgerrechtsbewegung durchgängig von zwei Tendenzen ab: Er stand in Opposition zum radikalen schwarzen Nationalismus

Die Beiträge sind Ergebnis eines Austauschs zwischen deutschen und israelischen Studierenden bzw. Wissenschaftler*innen. Jan Gerber thematisiert Die Holocaust-Rezeption in der DDR. Er erklärt die Defizite der DDR-Geschichtswissenschaft in der Aufarbeitung des Holocaust mit dem begrifflichen Instrumentarium der Gedächtnistheorie von Aleida und Jan Assmann. Politische Interessen, die Abgrenzung gegenüber Israel, überformten den Diskurs in der Historiografie.
