In 2023, an archaeological research project was initiated by the University of Udine, in cooperation with the Dohuk Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on the site of Bazhera, on the eastern bank of the Nahr al-Khazir, in the Akre district. The site consists of a partially standing building, which would have played a role in the communication system of the region during the late Islamic period, as one of the stations in support of travellers. The main objective of the project is to reconstruct the functioning of this structure, its material culture and its relationship with other archaeological remains identified on the settlement and with the surrounding landscape, in order to provide new data regarding land management and protection of a frontier region of the Ottoman empire which has been neglected by archaeological research. Keywords Ottoman archaeology. Ottoman material culture. Ottoman stations. Khans and routes of the Islamic world. Late Islamic Kurdistan.

Ifpo is organizing a series of thematic workshops for 2019 on « Ceramic Studies in Lebanon », aimed at creating a scientific dynamic around archaeological projects involving a ceramic dimension. The objective is to bring together researchers working on material culture, and more particularly on ceramic assemblages in Lebanon, by tracing thematic paths that will make it possible to tackle, on the one hand, the typological and chronological analysis of finds from archaeological context, but also to create a debate on the state of the art and research perspectives. The first of these workshops focuses on the Beqaa Valley, « Ceramic Studies in the Beqaa Valley: A Regional Perspective ». It brings together experts working on ceramic materials from different periods. The ceramic assemblages will be placed in their regional context but also treated in relation to extra-regional connections. Moreover, this workshop aims at encouraging the scientific debate on future perspectives of ceramic studies in this region of Lebanon and to reveal strong and weak points of research potential.

This presentation provides a general introduction to sphero-conical vessels, interpretations of their various uses, and related archaeological evidence, with a particular focus on the collection issued from the site of Baalbek in Lebanon. Scholars have suggested that these ceramic objects may have been used for different purposes, for instance, as wine and beer flasks or as vessels to store perfume and mercury. Recent archaeological excavations in the area of Bustan Nassif, south of the citadel of Baalbek, have yielded a diverse and challenging corpus of such sphero-conical vessels. These newly uncovered artifacts offer intriguing new evidence to understand their multiple functions, especially within a military context.

Have epidemics changed the history of the Near and Middle East? How did societies from this region react to this phenomenon?

This serie of podcasts wants to look back at the history of epidemics in a region which has been regularly affected during the past, relying on the work of historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, linguists and philosophers.

Episode #4 “The Black Death: Venice and the Creation of the Lazzaretto” (with Lara Meneghini), discusses about how the city of Venice, leader of the Mediterranean trade during the Middle Ages and Early Modern History, reacted to the threat of the plague in order to guarantee its economic interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. Lara Meneghini discusses about the creation of the lazzaretti and their role in preventing the spread of epidemics. Through an historical and archaeological perspective, she presents the material evidence of these quarantine structures and of the passage of goods and merchants coming from the Near and Middle East.

This bilingual English/Arabic manual is intended to accompany the training of future ceramic specialists in the Arab world. Resulting from the collaboration of four major institutions of French archaeology abroad: the Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan (Sfdas), the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), the Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo) and the Centre français de recherche de la péninsule Arabique (Cefrepa), it draws on the recent work of specialists from the Nile Valley, the Near East and the Arabian Peninsula to shed light on the theoretical reflections that have enriched ceramic studies in recent decades. Providing a genuine field tool, this volume is nonetheless a skilfully illustrated collection of the contribution of ceramic studies to the understanding of human history.
