Sphero-conical vessels are a special category of multifunctional tableware often discovered at medieval Volga archaeological sites. The paper examines the main types of sphero-conical vessels found at Tsarevskoye settlement, deposited in the Archaeological Museum of Kazan Federal University, Volgograd Regional Museum of Local Lore and the State Hermitage, as well as a stone mold for making cone-shaped vessels. A review of these items in the context of the study of sphero-conical vessels from other Golden Horde sites makes it possible to establish the peculiarities of their existence at Lower Volga sites.

The article addresses technical ceramics found on the territory of the estate of blacksmiths-artisans at the Bilyar fortified settlement. Among the tools of craftsmen at Bilyar there were crucibles, open flat-bottom spoon, sphero-conical vessels and polishers. In addition to the results of comparative typological analysis of crucibles and sphero-conical vessels, the article presents data on the composition of metals on the walls of crucibles made by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the chemical composition of the molded mass of sphero-conical vessels carried out by X-ray fluorescence spectral analysis (XRF). Particular attention should be paid to the discovery of a warehouse of sphero-conical vessels on the excavation site.

В данной статье рассматривается проблема состава традиций изготовления сфероконических сосудов в золотоордынском Болгаре. Изложены результаты комплексного изучения серии сфероконусов, включающие типологию сосудов и технологию их изготовления. Зафиксирован неоднородный состав традиций конструирования и формообразования изделий разных типов. Комплекс технологических навыков изготовления сфероконусов соответствует составу навыков гончаров-ремесленников, занимавшихся массовым производством круговой посуды (керамика I общеболгарской группы) в Болгаре. Сосуды раннего типа начали изготовляться в Болгаре в раннезолотоордынское время в мастерских подгорной части города, а сосуды позднего типа-в позднезолотоордынское время в мастерских в районе Голландского озера. Зафиксирована традиция массового использования гончарами при изготовлении сфероконусов обоих типов слабозапесоченной глины, часто с большим количеством различных железистых включений. Это обстоятельство подтверждает специфику сосудов этой категории, связанную с особыми представлениями гончаров об исходном пластичном сырье и местах его добычи. This presentation provides a general introduction to sphero-conical vessels, interpretations of their various uses, and related archaeological evidence, with a particular focus on the collection issued from the site of Baalbek in Lebanon. Scholars have suggested that these ceramic objects may have been used for different purposes, for instance, as wine and beer flasks or as vessels to store perfume and mercury. Recent archaeological excavations in the area of Bustan Nassif, south of the citadel of Baalbek, have yielded a diverse and challenging corpus of such sphero-conical vessels. These newly uncovered artifacts offer intriguing new evidence to understand their multiple functions, especially within a military context.
