ような、より多様な番組内容および視聴者の番組視聴予定についてより大きな操
作性をテレビ視聴者に提供するサービスを有するケーブルシステムが出現した。

オ・オン・デマンド番組リストにスクロールする度に、番組説明ボックス７３は
更新され、現在示されている番組についての情報を表示する。その結果、視聴者
はビデオ・オン・デマンド番組の自動的に更新されたテキスト説明をブラウジン
グしている間に、選択されたテレビ番組を見得る。この特徴は、例えば、家族の
一員が進行中の番組を見続けたいと望む一方で家族の他の一員がビデオ・オン・
デマンド番組をブラウズしたいと望むときに特に有用であり得る。
【００５０】 いくつかのビデオ・オン・デマンド番組は、それらと関連付けられたビデオク
リッププレビューを有し得る。図６ａに示されるように、番組ガイド表示７０は
、列挙された番組が関連付けられたビデオクリッププレビューを有することを指
示するためにビデオクリップアイコン７９を含み得る。番組ガイド表示７０上の

組ガイド表示７０およびビデオウィンドウ７１が全て同時に見られ得るように、
プレビューがビデオウィンドウ７１に呈示され得る（図６ｂに示される）。しか
し、ある実施の形態において、ビデオウィンドウ７１は全スクリーン表示であっ
ても、あるいは視聴者選択可能（すなわち、全スクリーン表示から部分スクリー
ン表示およびその逆に変更し得る）であってもよい。ビデオウィンドウ７１は、

ビデオ・オン・デマンド番組に興味を持った場合、この視聴者はその番組を要求
し得る。例えば、図６において、視聴者が「トゥルーマンショー」番組を要求し
たいと仮定する。選択キー５２（図５）などのリモート５０上のいずれもの適切
なキーを押すことによって、視聴者は、ビデオサーバ２９からその番組を要求す
ることを番組ガイドに指示し得る（図３）。視聴者が詳細な情報スクリーン（図
示せず）上の特定の番組についてさらなる情報をブラウジングする場合、そのス
クリーンは、そのビデオ・オン・デマンド番組をオーダーするためのスクリーン
上ボタンを含み得る。購入キー５６（図５）などのリモート５０上のいずれもの
適切なキーを押すことによって、視聴者はスクリーン上ボタンをアクティブにし
得、それによってビデオサーバ２９（図３）からその番組を要求することを番組
ガイドに指示する。
【００５３】 視聴者がビデオ・オン・デマンド番組を一旦要求すると、視聴者にオーダーを
完了するために入力を要求する一つまたはそれ以上の構成および制御スクリーン
が現れ得る。図８に示されるように、構成および制御スクリーン８０は、要求さ
れた番組のタイトル８１および料金８９および視聴者入力のための一連のデータ
フィールドを含み得る。このようなデータフィールドは、購入確認フィールド８
２、親管理コードフィールド８４、提出フォームフィールド８５、番組開始時間
フィールド８６、および開始番組即時フィールド８８を含み得る。視聴者はカー
ソルキー５４を用いて構成および制御スクリーン８０をナビゲートし得、リモー
ト５０上の適切なキー（図５）を用いてデータフィールドに要求された情報を入
力し得る。

５０上の数値キー６０からの入力を必要とし得る。例えば、番組開始時間フィー

事前のオーダー」（図示せず）に対して提供され得る。

図９のフローチャートに示す。ステップ１００で、番組ガイドは視聴者に、ビデ
オ・オン・デマンドブラウジングモードあるいは通常ブラウジングモードのいず
れかを呼び出すためのオプションを与える。視聴者がビデオ・オン・デマンドブ
ラウジングモードを呼び出すことを選択する場合、ステップ１０１で番組ガイド
表示７０が視聴者テレビ機器３０上に表示される。視聴者が通常ブラウジングモ
ードを呼び出すことを選択する場合、番組ガイドは視聴者テレビ機器３０上で番
組ガイド表示（図示せず）を表示し、現在のチャンネルを反映した番組リストを
表示する可能性がある。
【００５８】 ステップ１００でビデオ・オン・デマンドブラウジングモードが選択されると
仮定すると、ステップ１０１で番組ガイド表示７０が視聴者テレビ機器３０上で
表示される。番組ガイド表示７０が最初に表示されると、「デフォルト」カテゴ
リおよび番組リストに設定され得るか、あるいは前に選択されたカテゴリおよび
／または番組に戻り得る。ステップ１０２で、視聴者は左右カーソルキー５４ｄ
および５４ｃを用いて利用可能な番組カテゴリをブラウズし得、および／または
上下カーソルキー５４ａおよび５４ｂを用いてそのカテゴリ内の利用可能な番組
カテゴリをブラウズし得る。目的の番組がそのカテゴリ内に見出されない場合は
、新たなカテゴリが選択され得、視聴者はそのカテゴリ内の番組をブラウズし得
る。目的となる番組が見出されるか、あるいはリモート５０上のＴＶへ戻るキー
５９（図５）を押すことによって番組ガイド表示７０を出得るまで、視聴者は利
用可能なカテゴリおよび番組をブラウズし続け得る。
【００５９】 目的となるビデオ・オン・デマンド番組が見出される場合、視聴者はいくつか
のオプションを有する。例えば、視聴者は、１）利用可能である場合（例えば、
スクリーン上ボタンまたはリモートコントロールキーを用いて）番組のビデオク
リップを要求すること、２）（例えば、スクリーン上ボタンまたはリモートコン
トロールキーを用いて）番組を要求すること、または３）情報キー５３を押すこ
とによってその番組に関するさらなる情報を要求すること（ステップ１０３）を
行い得る。ビデオクリップ番組が要求される場合、ビデオクリップは視聴者の表
示スクリーンに呈示される（ステップ１０２）。ビデオ・オン・デマンド番組が
要求される場合、視聴者入力を要求する構成および制御スクリーンが現れ得る（
ステップ１０４）。視聴者は、要求された番組をオーダーするためにこのフォー
ムに書き込み、提出し得る。
【００６０】 この時点で、視聴者は、さらなるビデオ・オン・デマンド番組をブラウズする
ために番組ガイド表示７０に戻っても、あるいは所望である場合、視聴者は番組
ガイドから出るためにＴＶへ戻るキーを押してもよい（ステップ１０５）。

即座に提供する。しかし、選択された番組がより後の時間のためにオーダーされ

デマンド番組は一般的には、視聴者に対していつでも利用可能な番組のライブラ
リまたはデータベースからなる。このような番組は典型的には、近傍のテレビ配
信設備内に配置されたビデオサーバに格納される。視聴者は、データベースから
番組を選択し、ビデオサーバに選択した番組を提供するよう要求することができ
る。ビデオサーバは、その要求を処理し、選択された番組が利用可能な場合は、
