Abstract
527,271. Cable joints. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd., and CHESWORTH, J. April 6, 1939, No. 10692. [Class 38 (i)] An enclosure for a cable joint is built up in the factory ready for application to the joint and consists of an outer casing 3 with reduced ends 5 containing insulating spiders 8 carrying an insulating tube 9, which may be formed of impregnated paper, stress cones 18 attached to the ends 5 of the casing, and an inner tube 2 removably sealed to the cones 18 and forming a closed annular space filled with compound enclosing the tube 9. When the cable ends 31, 27 are to be joined, the structure is slid intact over one cable end 27, bushes 32, 35 are attached to the sheaths 26, 30 and screening tapes 25, 29, the cores 21-; 22 are joined by a ferrule 23 and then the casing 3 is drained by removing a plug 40, the tube 2 is detached from it and the casing 3 carrying the insulating tube 9 and stress cones 18 is slid over the joint till it abuts against a shoulder 38 on the bush 35 and the ends of the casing are then wiped at 41 to the cable sheaths 30, 26. Compound is filled into the casing through plugs 12.
