Abstract

814,050. Sleeve couplings. AMP Inc. May 7, 1957 [May 7, 1956], No. 14495/57. Class 38 (1). A grounding conductor B is connected to the braided conductor 14 of a shielded cable A by a connector C consisting of inner and outer metallic ferrules 22, 20 respectively connected, preferably and as shown at one end, by an annulus 26 having in it an aperture 32 of the same diameter as the core 29 of conductor C. The connection is made by pushing the inner ferrule 22 under braided conductor 14 and over insulation 12, the core of conductor B being then pushed into the outer ferrule 20 until it is visible through aperture 32, the assembly being then crimped. V-shaped slots 42 in ferrule 20 assist the easy crimping of the ferrule and close up to form slits 43 (Fig. 6, not shown). Alternatively, the assembly may be partly crimped before conductor B is inserted and the crimping completed after it has been inserted. An insulating sleeve, e.g. of P.V.C., may cover the connector (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 7, a conductor 28 connects two connectors C, C<SP>1</SP>, so that two shielded cables may be connected in series, conductor 28 being inserted through a hole in the annulus of connector C so that it can be connected to a cable, while the connector C<SP>1</SP> has an additional hole 32 for the grounding conductor B. The holes may alternatively be in the outer ferrules, or a hole may be formed in the end of a rib extending longitudinally of the ferrule. The connector is preferably formed so that the ferrules and annulus are integral, e.g. by a tube drawing operation, but it may be constructed from three separate pieces welded together.
