Abstract

915,528. Two-part couplings; cable terminals. AMP Inc. June 30, 1959 [June 30, 1958], No. 22399/59. Class 38 (1). A connector comprises a coupling portion integral with a ferrule 2 which is fastened to a sleeve 8 by inserting a wall 10 of the sleeve between portions 4, 6 of the ferrule and then expanding the portion 6 to a conical shape by means of a mandrel. An insulated cable 14 has its end stripped and secured in the ferrule by crimping and the portion 4 is crimped so that the cable insulation is gripped. In Fig. 4, a fluid-tight seal is formed between the sleeve 8 and a passageway in a block 16. Fig. 5 shows a connector 20 comprising a coupling-pin 24 engaged in a socket member 42. Between the pin and the ferrule 2 is a longitudinally split sleeve 26 having projections 28 ; the sleeve is held between collars 30, 32, the collar 30 being removable. The collar having been removed, the connector is pushed into a passageway in a block 22 until the projections 28 snap behind a shoulder in the passageway and the collar 32 abuts a second shoulder. The collar 30 is then slipped over the end of the pin 24 and is pushed along the pin until it abuts the projections 28. The socket 42 forms part of a second connector 38 mounted in a block 40. The blocks 22, 40 are separable and are sealed by packing 44, 46. Many such connections may be made between the blocks.
