A stress cone for use in a cable joint or termination is formed by rolling layers of paper interleaved with staggered electrodes 13 ... 15 which are all connected together by a lapping of lead wire 6 which also serves for connection to the sheath or screening tape 4 of a cable 2, either directly or (as shown) by means of a metal foil cylinder 9. In the case of a cable joint, the outermost electrodes 15 of the cable ends make contact with a metal cylinder surrounding the entire joint (Fig. 1, not shown). The clearance space between the core. and the outside of the cable is filled with insulating fluid.
