Abstract
432,167. Cable joints. OKONITECALLENDER CABLE CO., Inc., Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A. Jan. 21, 1935, No. 2018. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1934. [Class 38 (i)] The joint casing 15 for a multicore cable of the type in which the cores 7, insulated but unsheathed, are drawn into pipes 1 in which they are surrounded by oil under pressure, is sealed in a fluid-tight manner to the pipes 1 and to barrier plates 3 having thimbles 4 for the passage of the cores. Each insulated. core is covered for a short length adjacent the joint with a sheath 8 that may be reinforced with a wrapping 9 of surgical webbing, the webbing being wedged into the tapered thimble 4 and the sheath 8 passing through and being wiped at 14 to the thimble. Oil communication from the pipe 1 to the casing 15 can thus take place only by seepage through the cable insulation and by a controlled pipe 24. The joint between the casing 15 and the pipe 1 and barrier plate 3 is made by fitting the casing with a flange 16 carrying bolts 19 by which a ring 18 is drawn up to compress lead-tipped gaskets 21 within the ends of a sleeve 20. The joint 11 insulated by varnished cambric and paper 12 is covered with copper braid 13 soldered to the wipe 14.
