[Classes 36 and 38 (i)] A cable having a metal sheath 2 in which the cores 3 are embedded in mineral or other insulation 1, is sealed at the end by attaching a ferrule 5 by rolling grooves 6 in it and the sheath and inserting in the ferrule a plug 7 of wax, plastic material, &c. held in place by a cap 8 of hard insulation which is secured by forming a groove 10 in the cap and rolling a groove 9 in the ferrule, divergent holes 11 in the cap 8 being provided for the cores 3. The projecting ends of the cores serve for making a joint or coupling, a block 12 of insulation carrying split conductive sleeves 13 to receive the core ends. An outer coupling sleeve 14 may then be secured over the joint by rolling grooves 15 therein. Sealing sleeves 8a may surround each core and a lead ring 25 may be compressed by a ring 24 secured by rolling a groove 26. The block 12 may be enclosed in a screwed sleeve 16, Fig. 2, the cable ends being held thereto by coupling nuts 17 engaging split rings 18 let into the grooves 9. A lead tube 18a forms a packing between the nuts 17. Where other or further connections are required, the cable end may be secured to a junction box by a nut similar to the nut 17, the core ends entering split conductive inserts in superposed insulating blocks screwed together in the box. The inserts may be shaped to provide straight-through or branched connections.
