Abstract
472,736. Gaseous and pulverulent fuel burners. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Jan. 18, 1937, No. 1454. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1936. [Class 75 (i)] In a furnace having one or more tube-cooled walls some of the blocks 12 covering the wall are omitted to form burner ports to which preheated combustion air is supplied through a casing 14 and gaseous fuel is supplied in small jets from manifolds 21 connected by branches 20 to pipes 19 leading from a header 16. The manifolds 21 are formed by elongated hollow members having concave inner sides 22 fitting against the wall tubes 11. The air supply is regulated by ovate dampers 30 arranged between the manifolds 21 and mounted on a frame comprising side bars 32 and transverse plates 31. The frame is movable towards and away from the burner port by means of connected bell-crank levers 33 operated by an axially movable rod 36. In a modification, the manifolds extend farther around the tubes and are provided with orifices discharging at or about the axial plane of the tubes. Fig. 7 shows the combination of a pulverulent fuel burner 42 discharging centrally into the spaces between the tubes 41 of a furnace arch through nozzles 43 with a gas burner comprising a series of manifolds 44 discharging through diverging nozzles 45 contacting with the opposite sides of alternate tubes 41. The pulverulent and gaseous fuel burners may be used either separately or together.
