433,936. Boiler furnaces. STENFORS, F. I. E., Sundsvall, Sweden. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 19733/35. Divided out of 433,551. [Class 51 (i)] In order that a furnace divided by a grate into a fuel chamber 2 and a combustion cham ber 4, having separate air intakes 5 and 6<a> respectively, may be operated with reversed as well as with usual combustion, the furnace is provided with a damper 9 so that the chambers can be alternatively connected to the outlet flue 10 and the air supply to the combustion chamber is so arranged that at reversed, as well as with usual combustion, the air is uniformly distributed along the whole surface of the grate. The furnace may be operated with solid fuel into which project inlet pipes for the addition of gaseous or liquid fuel if desired or alternatively, the chamber 2 may be filled with pieces of refractory material and the furnace operated with gaseous or liquid fuel or both. The grate is preferably formed by hollow bars 6 connected to the atmosphere either directly or, as shown, through a distribution box 6<a>. In a modification the air is supplied through a tube system disposed adjacent the grate. The walls of the chambers 2 and 4 are lined with plates 12 fluted or otherwise formed to increase the interior surface. With the damper 9 in the full line position partial combustion takes place in the chamber 2 and the final combustion in the chamber 4. In the dotted line position of the damper, the chamber 4 is shut off and the gate bars supply primary air for the combustion of fuel in the chamber 2.
