Abstract
645,007. Gas burners. MINCHIN, L. T. July 30, 1947, No. 20637. [Class 75(i)] A gas burner producing flat flames by mutual impingement of two gas streams comprises a hollow body having one or more outlet ends provided with a plurality of exit apertures, each outlet end being elongated in a plane transverse to the fluid flow therethrough and being preferably wedge-shaped in the direction of the fluid flow, the exit apertures extending wholly across the end wall of each outlet end in the direction of the small dimension thereof. Fig. 1 shows a burner head of wedge form through which gas passes to a plurality of orifices 18 extending across the end wall 17. The section of the burner head transverse to the gas flow is elongated. The gas is deflected by the end wall 17 in such a way that two converging streams indicated by the arrows flow into each aperture. The intact parts of the end wall adjoining the apertures may be of different length and inclination to produce flames inclined to the burner head. The two side walls 19, 20 may also be inclined and all four side walls may converge symmetrically toward a common point or they may form a parallelepiped. The burner shown in Figs. 6, 7 consists of a box-like body 23 with a corrugated upper surface 24 defining a plurality of wedgeshaped outlet ends with flame ports 27 extending across their end walls 26. The flame ports may be aligned transverse to the length of the corrugations. Figs. 8, 11 show a burner suitable for inserting in the ash-pit of a domestic water heater to convert the heater from solid to gas firing. The burner head 42 is of tapered triangular section providing wedge shaped spaces leading to equi-spaced flame ports 52 in the edges 49, 50, 51 of the burner. A cover plate 46 having a collar 45 to which the gas inlet pipe is secured covers the mouth of the ash-pit and has apertures for the ingress of secondary air. The edges 49, 50, 51 of the burner are equidistant from the interior surface of the U- shaped boiler. Specifications 250,704, [Class 75(i)], and 615,805 are referred to.
