[Class 120 (ii)] In a quick-traverse winding frame for yarns and threads in which the winding spindle is driven by friction gearing controlled from the thread guide, the centrifugal force exerted by the driving disc is.prevented from influencing the thread guide by a ball which is mounted between the jaws of a detent. As shown, the ball 56 is mounted between an arcuate grooved member 54 fixed to the machine frame and forming one jaw of the detent and a surface 55 forming the other jaw of the detent on a member 49 carried by a rock-shaft 48 and connected by pivoted links 51, 54 with an extension 43 on one member 38 of the swinging thread guide frame 36 ; the shaft 48 also carries a lever 59 controlling the movement of the friction driving disc 8 along the shaft 9 and face of the disc 7 on the winding spindle 4. As the frame 36 moves from the winding spindle 4 with the growth of the cheese 6, the extension 43 moves the link 51 and causes an arm 58 thereon to urge the ball 56 out of its locking position between the members 54, 55 against the return of a spring 57 and allows the controlling member 59 and consequently the driving disc 8 to move ; the disc moves outwardly over the disc 7 to reduce the speed of the winding spindle, but excessive movement due to centrifugal action is prevented by the movement of the member 49 which urges the ball 56 into the locking position again. The spindle disc 7 is forced against the driving disc 8 by a spring 12 and is moved away from the disc 8 when it is desired to stop the spindle by jaws 14 on a sliding rod 13 which is moved by a spring 20 when a catch 22 is disengaged from a pivoted latch, 25 ; the catch 22 is carried bv an arm pivoted to the rod 13 and actuated by a hand lever 16. The thread guide frame 36 is held against the cheese by counterweights 41, 42, the weight 42 being pivoted to the weight 41 and connected to an adjustable link so that it is rocked as the diameter of the cheese increases to balance the weight of the thread guide frame and its associated parts.
