Abstract

495,017. Winding and warping yarns. SHAW, W. March 2,1937, No. 6160. [Classes 120 (ii) and 142 (iv)] A yarn winding or warping machine is provided with a member which is controlled by the movements of an angularly-movable and adjustably-controlled compensator arm and controls the drive for the supply bobbin obtained from the winding spindle or a shaft driving this spindle, the drive being at all times effected against the action of a constant brake load and an additional brake load being brought into action by the operation of the compensator arm if, on sudden stoppage of the winding spindle, the constant brake load does not suffice, owing to the momentum of the supply bobbin, to bring said bobbin quickly to rest when the drive ceases. As shown, the yarn from the supply bobbin h passes over two guides i, m on the compensator arm on its way to the winding spindle a, the guide m being disposed at the free end of the arm and the guide i between the guide m and the pivot n on which the arm is mounted. A spring n<2> coiled about the pivot n has one end secured to a boss on the arm and the other adjustably held in a disc n<4> on the bracket o in which the pivot n is mounted and the boss j is also connected by a spring p to a part p<1> on the bracket o. The arm j is connected by a rod p<2> to a lever p<3> pivoted in the bracket p<5> carrying the shaft r<2> on which the bobbin h is mounted and an arm of the lever bears against a boss r slidable along a sleeve r<1> rotatably mounted on the shaft r<2> and driven by a pulley r<3> from the shaft f driving the winding spindle. A spring r<4> is arranged between the boss r and pulley r<3> and the boss carries pins r<5> which project through slots in the sleeve and engage between discs r<6>, r<7> slidable on the shaft r<2>. Springs s<1>, u<1> are arranged between the discs and plates s, u which respectively exert pressure on a series of discs s<2>, u<2>, alternate ones of which are splined to the shaft r<2> and the intervening ones being carried by pins t, v projecting respectively from a part t<1> fixed to the sleeve r<1> and a part v<1> fixed to the bracket p<5>. The springs and position of the arm are arranged so that in normal running the lever p<3> bears against the boss r and causes sufficient pressure to be exerted on the discs s<2> to cause the brake load, imposed by the friction between the discs u<2>, to be overcome to the extent necessary to cause the shaft r<2> to be driven at the speed required to maintain a constant tension on the yarn. The constant brake load is caused by the friction between the discs u<2> when no pressure is exerted on the discs and plate u and this is not effected by movements of the compensator arm during running and variations in the drive of the shaft r<2> ; any variations in the tension on the yarn, varies the driving action of the discs s<2>, without effecting the constant brake load, but if the compensator arm rises as a result of decreased tension, the drive effect is eased and the running brake load imposed by the discs u<2>, controls the bobbin h and prevents undue delivery of yarn. If there is a cessation of tension on the yarn, e.g. if the winding spindle stops, the spring n<2> moves the arm j so that the action of the spring r<4> is overcome and the braking action of the discs u<2> is increased to give an additional brake load and bring the shaft r<2> quickly to rest if the constant brake load does not suffice. The multidisc devices may be replaced by electromagnetic, hydraulic or centrifugal clutch devices.
