Abstract
482,274. Winding yarn &c. SHAW, W. July 21, 1936, No. 20141. [Class 120 (ii)] A yarn or filament winding -machine comprises a winding spindle 1 and a traverse guide 33 carried by a traverse spindle 32 which is reciprocated by a slidable member 23 carrying a pivotal nut block 22 engaging a reversing worm 21 on the spindle 1, the angular position of the nut block being positively controlled. The worm 21 has cam members 24, 25 at its ends for reversing the block at each end of its traverse, and the block, pivoted in the member 23, has its angular position controlled by a spindle 28 carrying an arm 27 having a pin 26 engaging a fixed guide slot 29 having two paths which hold the block 22 against rocking movement until the pin 26 is switched from one to the other of the paths by the cam 24 or 25 engaging the nut block ; the movement of the pin 26 and arm 27 then causes the block 22 to rock and its thread to change over from one thread of the worm 21 to the other. The member 23 carries two rods 30, 31 which are connected by a strut 34 and reciprocated parallel to the spindle 1, the rod 31 carrying the threaded traverse spindle 32 on the plain portion of which the inner member of a one-way clutch is mounted, the other member 35 of the clutch carrying a pin engaging a slot in a angularly adjustable lever 36. The lever can be adjusted by a knob on a spindle 40 carrying a worm 39 engaging quadrant teeth 38 on the lever 36, the angularity of the slot in the lever relative to the spindle 32 determining the rotary movement given to the clutch 35 at each reciprocation of the spindle in one directon and so the rotary movement of the threaded spindle 32 and the feed of the guide 33 along it ; backward rotary movement of the spindle may be prevented by a brake or by a second clutch 37 and the second clutch 37 may have its outer member engaging a second lever having its slot set oppositely to that of the lever 36 so that the traverse guide will be moved along the spindle in each direction of reciprocation. If cheeses are being wound, the slotted lever 36 is arranged to move the traverse guide away from the spindle as the yarn mass is being wound so as to maintain constant the distance between the guide and the surface of the cheese being wound. The spindle 1 carries a loose friction disc 5 which is connected by a spring 6 to a collar 8 fixed to the shaft and is driven by a friction wheel 4, a spring 7 being located between the disc 5 and a slidable collar 9 by which the disc is moved into or out of engagement with the wheel 4; the collar 9 is engaged by a fork 10 on a spindle 11 carrying a piston 12 working in a cylinder 13 having at each end an orifice of normally restricted area so that a slow movement is given to the spindle 11 and so to the winding spindle 1 at starting and stopping. The spindle 11 carries a catch 20 which, when the handle 16 on the spindle is moved to start the machine, engages the part 20<1> of a trip lever 20<2> to hold a spring 17, between a fixed part 18 and a collar 19 on the spindle, compressed and, if the yarn supply should fail, connections from the usual detector lever move a pivoted lever 43 so that a heel 43<1> thereon trips the lever 20<2> and allows the spring 17 to move the spindle 11 to stop the machine, the movement of the spindle being rendered rapid by the movement of a valve 45 which is actuated from the lever 43 to increase the area of the orifices in the cylinder 13.
