[Class 120 (ii)] A yarn winding machine having a winding spindle, a reciprocating traverse member and means for swinging the spindle and traverse mechanism relatively to each other as the winding proceeds, is furnished with automatic stop means comprising an element constantly driven during the operation of the machine and a stop member movable into engagement with the driven element to initiate the operation of the stop means, the member having an extension positioned in the path of the reciprocating traverse member so that the stop member is moved thereby to initiate the stop means when a package of predetermined size has been wound. During normal operation of the machine, hook 28 on a segment 20, pivoted at 21 to the main frame, engages a hook 27 on an arm which operates a clutch, driving the spindle 3, and also the brake 26. The hook 27 is biassed by a spring 25 so that upon release by the hook 28 the brake 26 will be applied to the spindle and the driving clutch thrown out. The operation of the hook 28 is brought about by the movement of the segment 20, about its pivot 21, which happens when a thread breaks or fails so releasing an arm 33 attached to the segment 20, into the path of a rotating notched wheel 35. Also attached to the segment 20 is an arm 40 carried in a block 41 which also carries an adjustable arm 42 the end 44 of which projects into a position where it may be contacted by a shoulder on the traverse bar which has been moving outwardly from the spindle 3 as the package was growing. When the end 44 is so contacted, the arm 40 is depressed into the wheel 35 which tilts the segment 20 and stops the machine. In a modification, the arm 40 is arranged to co-operate directly with the arm 33 to stop the machine while in a further modification the arm 40 is omitted, the arm 42 being arranged to operate the arm 33 to stop the machine.
