[Class 119.] A box magazine, either upright or horizontal, for automatic firearms is provided with a latch which normally holds the movable side or lid of the magazine in its closed position and automatically releases the lid and holds the cartridge feeder when the latter is retracted to its tensioned position. In the form shown, the magazine is removably connected to the side of a smallarm by means of a lip 7 and a flatted rotatable bolt 9 which engages with a catch 8. The magazine consists of a frame 2, a steel mouthpiece 1, and a spring-controlled hinged lid 11. The lid is normally held in the closed position by a latch 35 pivoting on a pin 34 which is mounted in the outer end of the magazine. The latch, which is controlled by a spring 36, has two arms one of which has a lip 43 adapted to engage with an inclined surface 44 of a slot 45 in the lid. The other arm is formed with a lip 41 and an inclined surface 42, both of which functionally operate with the retractable cartridge feeder 16. In the retracting operation, an inclined surface 38 on the feeder depresses the latch slightly by engaging with the lip 41 but not by a sufficient amount to release the lid. By the subsequent engagement of the surfaces 38 and 42, the resultant movement of the latch is sufficient to release the lid which flies open under the action of its spring 15. Upon closing the lid, the latch is moved by the surface 44 thereof to release the feeder from the lip 41. The feeder is guided by its sides 17, 18, and by two lateral surfaces 19 of a bearing member 20 welded thereto. This member projects through a slot 21 in the lower wall of the magazine and carries a grooved roller 25 with which engages a manually operated tensioning lever 26 which effects the retracting movement of the feeder. This lever is pivoted about a pin in a lug 29 and is controlled by a spring 29a. A further slot 61, provided in the lower wall of the magazine, provides an escape for'the cartridge clip when the last cartridge has been discharged. At this stage, the breech-block is held in its retracted position by a pivoted lever 69 actuated by a lever 67, which in turn is actuated by the bearing member 20 when in its extreme advanced position.
