Abstract

339,963. Esling, F. Sept. 12, 1929. Materials for making coke and other products. -Bituminous shales, cannel coals, torbanites, &c. are distilled in admixture with petroleum or its derivatives to yield distillates of low sulphur content and a pitch-like residue suitable for road surfacing. Vegetable oils such as linseed, cotton seed, rape, olive, or tung oils may be added. The shale is preferably powdered, and may be mixed with lime to assist sulphur removal. Steam may be injected during distillation.
