Abstract

A bituminous composition, for producing a rough surface on roads, comprises a natural or petroleum asphalt having a melting point above 55 DEG C. Kramer Sarnow, an oil or solvent boiling between 150-400 DEG C., and a small porportion of rubber. Suitable oils and solvents are oils distilled from coal, mineral oil, wood, shale, or the like, gas oils, solvent naphtha, low viscosity tars and natural oils such as Texas oil. The rubber is preferably added in solution in benzole, benzine, solvent naphtha, tar oil, &c. The mixture may be emulsified. In an example, 840 kg. of petroleum bitumen of melting point 90-100 DEG C. are melted and mixed with 120 kg. of gas oil. To this mixture is added 40 kg. of a 5 per cent solution of rubber. Existing roads which have been made of bituminous material of sufficiently high melting point may be roughened by treating with an oil or solvent, having a boiling point between 150-400 DEG C., containing rubber in solution. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also compositions not containing rubber. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
