[Class 95] [Also in Group V] The adhesive and spreading properties of unemulsified bituminous substances and compositions are improved by adding a small quantity of a sulphuric acid ester or aryl sulphonic acid ester of a lower primary aliphatic alcohol, (i.e. those containing not ,more than eight carbon atoms in the molecule) or substances from which these esters may be formed. All sorts of bitumens are treated, particularly mineral oil distillation residues, steam refined bitumen, residues from the extraction of mineral oils or fractions thereof with hydrocarbons of low molecular weight or other solvents, such as the socalled propane asphalts, mineral oil cracking residues, bitumens from acid sludge, blown, sulphurized or chlorinated asphaltic bitumens, natural asphalts, bituminous shale, bituminous sand, various tars and pitches. The bituminous substances may be mixed with mineral or organic substances, such as road oils, bitumen dispersions or solutions or bituminous paints. Examples of esters are dimethyl sulphate. diethyl sulphate, di-n-propyl sulphate, benzene sulphonic acid methyl ester, benzene disulphonic acid dimethyl ester and p-toluene sulphonic acid ethyl ester or a mixture of methyl alcohol and sulphuric acid may be used The products may be used in road construction as paints for impregnating fibrous materials or as adhesives in applying asphalt, rubber or wood to other materials.
