Abstract
A road-surfacing composition which can be spread by apparatus usually used for spreading ordinary road tar, comprises a tar-bitumen or tar-pitch mixture containing a high proportion, ranging from 65 to 85 per cent, of bitumen or pitch, and a carbonaceous filler, preferably finely powdered coal, in amount by volume ranging from 25 to 40 per cent of the total composition. The tar-pitch or tar-bitumen mixture may be a tar containing at least 65 per cent of pitch, in which case no addition of pitch is necessary, or may be made by adding bitumen or pitch to a tar very poor in pitch, e.g. a middle or heavy oil such as creosote or anthracene oil. In an example, a composition comprises 60 to 65 per cent of a tar-bitumen formed of a mixture of 85 per cent of bitumen or petroleum pitch and of 15 per cent of creosote, and from 35 to 40 per cent of coal.
