Abstract
Chlorinated rubber, to the extent of not more than 20 per cent by weight of the material, is incorporated in bituminous material for road construction. The bituminous material may be coal tar, petroleum or natural asphalt, or mixtures thereof, or asphalt containing paraffin, or a distillation product of lignite, wood or shale. The mixture may be heated or mixed with fluxes before p application to the road, or it may be applied in the form of an aqueous emulsion. The chlorinated rubber may contain equal weights of chlorine and rubber, or 1 part of chlorine to 2 of rubber. In the examples, (1) 20 kilos of chlorinated rubber dissolved in trichlorethylene are mixed with 350 kilos of anthracene oil, and then, while heating, with 650 kilos of coal tar pitch. (2) A mixture of 800 kilos of petroleum asphalt with 200 kilos of anthracene oil is rendered liquid by the addition of monochlorbenzene, and chlorinated rubber to the extent of 0,05 to 0,1 per cent is added. (3) 100 kilos of rubber in 900 kilos of benzene is chlorinated with about 100 kilos of chlorine, and the solution is introduced into a molten mixture of 750 kilos of lignite tar-pitch and 250 kilos of anthracene oil, and the benzene is removed by distillation.
