Abstract
<PICT:0388093/III/1> A road-making composition is made by emulsifying lime wash or other calcareous substances and tar or bituminous material in a vibratory vessel in such a manner that contact between the mixture and stirring or like means is avoided. Alkali silicates and solvents, e.g. sulphurous oils such as tar oils containing added sulphur, benzol, carbon sulphides &c. may be added. In an example, 12 kg. of unslaked lime are slaked and made into a wash with 100 kgs. of hot water; to this is added about 50 per cent, by weight of the lime wash, of heated bituminous material, e.g. tar, tar pitch mixed with tar oil, or bitumen mixed with mineral oils; 1-2 kgs. of sodium or potassium silicate, and solvent, such as raw benzol or oils charged with or rich in sulphur. The mixture is then agitated in a jigging machine, as shown, comprising a vessel 1 mounted on arms 3 and reciprocated by crank mechanism 7, 5. The resulting emulsion can only be freed from water by the application of pressure.
