[Also in Divisions C3, C4 and Dl] A material for coating walls, metal tanks, roofs and floors of railway wagons, cars, lorries, and refrigerated compartments is obtained by dispersing in a solvent mixture (A), a powdered neutralizing agent (B), and thereafter gradually adding mineral oil acid sludge (C) at a speed and temperature such that no acid vapour escapes and no excessive swelling of the mass occurs. Solvent (A) consists of materials selected from petroleum, coal and shale bitumens; higher fatty acids, resinic acids, naphthenic acids, and tall oil; natural or synthetic drying oils; unsaturated hydrocarbon extracts from oil refining; unsaturated drying hydrocarbon polymers and resin from steam cracking; and mineral oils. Neutralizing agent (B) is selected from alkaline earth oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates, and is mixed with (A) at a temperature such that the mixture formed is a liquid or paste. Sludge (C) is formed during the refining or reclaiming of mineral oils with sulphuric reagents including H 2 SO 4 , H 2 S 2 O 7 and SO 3 . The proportion of (B) in the mixture is at least sufficient to neutralize (C). To (A) may be added spent clay from decolouration of mineral oils, which contains residual hydrocarbons and bleaching earths. Other optional additives are light organic solvents e.g. hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, ether oxides, and esters: water proofing and water-repellent agents, viz. fatty, naphthenic, resinic and tall oil soaps of fatty amines and polyamines; elastomers e.g. polybutenes; polybutadienes; polyvinyl acetate in solution or emulsion; epoxide resins and esters, acrylic and polysulphide resins; silicones; drying agents, viz. naphthenates, octanoates and decanoates of Pb, Mn, Co, Fe, Ca and Ce: antiseptics, bactericide, fungicides and algicides, e.g. wood tars; emulsifying or wetting agents, viz. alkali metal soaps and sulphonates and non-ionic surfactants; compounds able to produce a plastifying effect under the action of heat, pressure and ultrasonics; and fillers, as powders, fibres, grains or pieces. Fillers specified' are kaolin, mica, clay, Fullers earth. infusorial earth, calcium sulphate, whiting, metal oxides, cork, sawdust, sand, gravel, stones, asbestos, rock wool, and glass fibres. The compositions may be incorporated into bitumen.
