Abstract

<PICT:0457971/III/1> Liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. coal tar, and a mixture or suspension of liquid and solid hydrocarbons, are coked in separate coking chambers and the distillates from both the coking operation and fractionated in a common fractionating tower, one or more of the fractions obtained being used as the liquid constituent of the mixture or suspension. The other fractions may be cracked. A battery of four ovens preferably of the Knowles type is employed the ovens a being filled with liquid hydrocarbon from a container i while the ovens a<1> are filled with a coal-oil suspension from a mixer e. The vapours evolved pass through a common main b to a fractionating column c from which fractions are taken off and passed to condensers d. Heavy fractions are passed through a heat-exchanger d<1> to the mixer e to which solid carbonaceous material is supplied from a container f. Liquid hydrocarbons from the container i may also be fed through a line j to the mixer e.
