Abstract
Coal/oil mixtures are destructively distilled and cracked to obtain coke and hydrocarbons of low boiling point by introducing the mixture into the upper end of an inclined rotary retort externally heated from 350 to 550 DEG C., the volatile products being withdrawn from the upper end while the mixture as it passes down the retort is gradually reduced to coke which is removed at the lower end. Steam is introduced into the retort to assist cracking by infra-red radiation into the distillate and the amount of material passing through the retort maintained under atmospheric pressure is kept small in comparison with the volume of the retort. The apparatus used is the same as that described in Specification 393,602. Specifications 426,645, 427,960; and 430,649, [Group XII], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 393,601 and 393,602.
