Abstract

160,161. Kansas City Gasoline Co., (Assignees of Lasher, H. M.). March 12, 1920, [Convention date]. Hydrocarbons, cracking.-High-boiling hydrocarbons such as fuel oil are mixed with powdered bituminous coal or other carboniferous material and the mixture is distilled, with constant stirring, in a still 1 heated by a furnace and provided with a rotary stirrer 4. The vapours pass by pipe 8 to a fractionator 10 from which the heavy fractions are returned by a pipe 9 to the still, while the light vapours pass by a pipe 11 to a condenser 12. A temperature-indicator 18 is connected to a pyrometer in the vapour-outlet pipe. Fresh oil may be added to the still 1 to maintain the liquid level constant. The distillation is effected at temperatures from 600-1000‹ F. and at atmospheric pressure. If the distillation is continued until the still is dry, a residue of coke suitable for making fuel briquettes is obtained.
