Abstract
250,699. Struben, A. M. A. Jan. 26, 1925. Compositions for making gas and other products.-Solid carbonaceous materials such as torbanite, oil shale, coal, brown coal, peat, lignite, tar sands, wood, woody fibres, &c. are distilled in admixture with a liquid or fusible solid which boils at a temperature above the boiling-points of the distillates to be obtained. The added liquid is preferably an oil or wax, similar in character to the distillates. In the treatment of torbanite or oil shale, the crushed material is fed from a hopper a into a tube b in which it is mixed with two to three times its weight of a heavy oil or paraffin wax having a boiling-point of 300-350‹ C. supplied by a pump c. The mixture passes into a still e fitted with rotating blades or paddles f. Vapours pass by pipe k to a condenser l. A distillate boiling up to about 330‹ C. is obtained. The vapours may be condensed in fractions. The residual mixture may be distilled to dryness at 360-370‹ C. or may be treated to separate the liquid by passing it through a pipe g, into a settling vessel h, from which the liquid passes by a pipe m through a heat exchanger n back to the pump c. The solid is raised by an elevator o and passed into a second still q in which it is distilled to dryness.
