Abstract
Fuel oils free from phenols and sulphur are obtained by distilling fossil and bituminous fuels, e.g., shale, pit-coal, lignite, brown coal, peat in the presence of liquid hydrocarbons in amount of 10-40 per cent. of the fuel by weight and of similar boiling range to the oils to be recovered, e.g., tars obtained by the distillation process itself, the liquid oil being added to the solid fuel after this has been preheated to a temperature of 200 DEG -300 DEG C. and the distillation being carried out at from 350 DEG -650 DEG C. Ex. 1. A shale which distilled alone at 550 DEG C. yielded 34 per cent. oil containing 23 per cent. phenols was mixed with 25 per cent. light fuel oil and distilled at temps of 240 upwards, 57 per cent. of an oil containing practically no phenols or sulphur was obtained. (2) a lignite yielding 8 per cent. of oil containing 40 per cent. phenols distilled with 18 per cent. fuel oil gave 16 per cent. oil containing 4 per cent. phenol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that steam superheated to 250 DEG -650 DEG C. may be introduced into the distillation oven. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
