Abstract
338,804. Humphreys & Glasgow, Ltd., (Assignees of Kunberger, A. F.). March 2, 1929, [Convention date]. Water-gas plant.-In the manufacture of water gas, hydrogen produced by passing steam over hot iron is superheated and carburetted and then passed with excess steam through the upper part of the fuel bed, the whole of which is used simultaneously in generating water gas by uprunning, the mixed gas being taken off above the fuel bed. The blow gases pass from the generator 1 to the carburettor 7 and from thence to the vessel 10 containing hõematite, ore. The latter is reduced to iron sponge which is heated by the blast. The iron is then steamed, hydrogen being produced which passes with excess steam through the carburettor, where oil is injected through 9, to the upper portion of the fuel bed 2. Simultaneously the generator is steamed by up-running at 4, the mixed gases passing to the offtake 5. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a generator modified for down-steaming and an arrangement wherein an igniter may be substituted for the carburettor. Hydrogen and excess steam pass down through the fuel bed to be followed by an up-run or the mixture may bye-pass the water gas generator and be subsequently mixed with water gas or blue gas produced by up or downsteaming. The igniter may be superheated by steaming before passing the steam to the generators. In a further modification, a carburettor and a superheater may be placed after the hydrogen generator, the superheater being steamed before the generators. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
