Producers.-In the manufacture of carburetted water gas, oil, as vapour or gas, is simultaneously passed in parallel through a heated chamber and the hot fuel bed of a water gas producer, in which are produced respectively lightly cracked and heavily cracked oil gas. The plant comprises a water gas producer 1, carburettor 2 and superheater 3, oil is supplied through pipes 16 or 17, and oil gas through pipes 14 or 15. Steam supplies 10, 11 or 12 are provided, and air is introduced through conduit 9 with a branch 13 to the carburettor which may be either filled with chequer brick, or left empty when heavy oil is used. When the blow is completed and heat stored in the fuel bed, carburettor, and superheater, the up-run gases may be carburetted in the usual way with oil, or oil gas at 17, or 15 respectively, the gases passing to the wash box 7. Oil, or oil gas, is then again supplied to the carburettor and one portion of the oil vapour passes into and through the producer 1, where it is cracked, to the wash box 5, the other portion passing through the carburettor and superheater to the wash box 7, this portion being more lightly cracked and serving to enrich the water gas and the gasses passing through the fuel bed. In a modication, this carburettor takes the form of an empty chamber superposed on the gas producer, to which heavy oil is supplied, although this may be done through the pipe 16 shown in the drawing.
