Producers.-In the manufacture of mixed oil gas and water gas, in which oil gas is passed through an ignited fuel bed, the carbon deposited therefrom being used in the water gas production, the carburettor 2 and superheater 3 are heated by the blow gases, and the oil is supplied alternately by pipes 30 or 31 to these vessels and the oil gas passed through the other vessel and the fuel bed in the generator 1 after passage through a wash box 4 in which tar is removed. For example, oil is admitted by pipe 30 to the carburettor 2 with some steam or gas through pipe 32 to act as a carrier, and is cracked in vessels 2 and 3, passing through conduit 15 to the wash box 4, and through conduit 20 to a condenser 5 and pipe 21 to either the top or bottom of the fuel bed, the re-formed oil gasbeing withdrawn through another washer 6. Water gas may be generated by steaming the fuel in either direction to utilize the deposited carbon, and the water vapour carried by the oil gas from the wash box may be used to generate more water gas. Up-run water gas may be carburetted in the usual manner, or mixed with oil gas from vessels 3 and 2 which passes by connection 14 to above the fuel bed in the generator and together with the water gas to the wash box 6.
