Abstract

1346086 Offshore structures J RAY McDERMOTT & CO Inc 18 May 1971 [22 June 1970] 15657/71 Heading E1H A hollow leg 2 intended to form part of an offshore platform, and through which a pile is to be driven, is provided with removable upper and lower closure members 3, 4 which allow it to be towed to or floated at the installation site horizontally. The upper closure member 3 comprises an oversized stiffened plate 5 secured to the leg 2 by a seal weld 6, and the lower closure member 4 comprises a frustoconical, dished or stiffened flat metal member 15 secured by a seal weld (not shown) to the inside of the leg 2. The members 3, 4 are interconnected by a slack wire rope 34 and arm 21. By selective flooding leg 2 can be vertically positioned and sunk whereupon weld 6 is cut and an upward pull applied to member 4 via rope 34 to break its welded connection to leg 2 and pull it through the leg. The member 4 includes a peripheral tearing portion, various constructions of which are disclosed.
