Abstract

1,216,708. Anchoring suspension bridge cables. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. 2 Feb., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 5430/68. Heading E1B. An anchorage block 19 for a suspension bridge cable 11 is cast around an assembly of parallel or splayed tubes 23 welded between a perforated rear bearing plate 27 and a perforated front plate 53, each cable strand 17 passing 'through a respective tube 23 and having an end fitting 25. Prior to casting, the assembly is supported on a foundation 21 by frameworks 59. The end portions of adjacent tubes 23 are interconnected by webs, and an intermediate perforated plate 56 may be provided. In a modification the tube and plate assembly are formed in upper and lower halves secured together on site. The end fitting 25, Fig. 8, of each strand 17 may be of pouredzinc type and reacts against the bearing plate 27A through slotted shims 29 and a two-piece locating assembly 35, the tube 23 being filled with grout or plastics foam through tube 48 after its front end has been plugged. Each strand 17 may be of helical- or parallel-wire form and may be positioned in the front end of its tube 23 by nylon or zinc fairleads. Each tube 23 may be keyed in the concrete by welded-on studs.
