About this audiobook

Instant New York Times bestseller!

A chilling twist on the “cursed film” genre from the bestselling author of The Pallbearers Club and The Cabin at the End of the World.

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions—demons of the past be damned.

But at what cost?

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion

Editor's Note

A cursed film…

When the only surviving actor from a 1990s horror film is asked to help with the reboot, he begins to reflect back on the strange events surrounding the first movie’s creation. As the plot moves between eerie past and troubling present, Tremblay (“A Head Full of Ghosts”) explores the idea of cursed films (“Poltergeist,” for instance) and whether truth is scarier than legend.

Interesting premise, great narrators, but omg the characters are just so dull and one-dimentional.

Dnf. I'm not sophisticated enough to understand the reasoning behind presenting the audiobook with a narrator, and then also a separate script reading, and it felt like it wasn't heading towards a good payoff at the end, so I didn't want to waste more of my time. I did hang in for 3/4 of it, but was just getting more and more frustrated

This wasn’t a horror book to me. This was more of a philosophical book… I didn’t like it at all. It was hard to follow and really boring. Not one thing scary/creepy about it all.

Entertained throughout and enjoyed the format but a little contrived. I’m a little too stupid to understand an unreliable narrator though.

Excellent narration, but had to DNF as the plot was leaning on shock factor.

Such a fun listen. Genuinely eerie plot and a stroke of genius in its use of voice actors. Love!

Wow the audiobook of this book is amazing, the different characters really come to life throughout the story. The end of the story is not what I expected but it was great in the way that horror movies are when you think you know what is going to happen and are surprised by it being different.

The give stars rating is for the quality of the audiobook, because it is brilliant! It’s a full cast audiobook with sound effects, executed amazingly! It was like I was at the movie set with the cast!
The novel is not so good, predictable story, sometimes a bit boring, I only listened until the end because the audiobook was so enjoyable.

I always get mixed feelings after reading a Paul tremblay book. I never actually love the book on initial finish, but it isn't until later that I've realized the book is in the back of my mind and I actually did really like it of its making me feel this way. His books are always slow burns and you know something bad is going to happen at the end. Another mindf*ck and unsettling tale.

5 stars for the audiobook, 3.5 stars for the book. Really good multicast performance, great mixing. Story is very entertaining but I wanted more answers.

I love Paul Tremblay's other work, particularly A Head Full of Ghosts, and this was so awful I only finished it because I was already too far in. It was boring, the characters were forgettable; by the time something happened to anyone I didn't care about them anyway. It didn't pack a punch. I feel disappointed and it's the only 1 star rating I've given any book in a while.

This was the worst audiobook I have ever listened to. What in the world was the random skipping back and forth to the unedited narrators? I don’t understand if that was for effect of the book or what but it was so horrifically bad that it made the book unbearable to listen to.

This book and how it's crafted is very unique, and this performance by multiple readers is very intriguing... at first. By the end, I was looking for something pretty big to happen and I'm left thinking it was a missed opportunity. I don't feel the book knew where it was leading us, and then something was tacked on as an ending. I don't think it honors the characters we met along the way.

As an Intro to Paul Tremblay, this was just not my preferred style of writing. I audiobooked this and can appreciate a movie script being read to me. It made me feel part of a movie script. I enjoyed the elements of a haunted school house or more of a haunted mask. Otherwise there is no substantial plot to this book. There is no thriller no major development. I really struggled finishing this book.

The concept is stronger than the execution. The “movie” within the book is quite boring. The audiobook version is also quite strange. If you’re looking for a scary read this isn’t it.

Was well written but felt like I was reading a poor rip off of Joe from the YOU series, specifically the books. It wasn't enjoyable to read and honestly I had to reread several chapters because they made no sense and I still don't know what I read fully.

I loved the narration by the Thin Kid, but repeating the lines over and over again towards the ending got rough. I found the switchhing from Then and Now was awkward, and confusing.

Certainly horrific, jumping from timeline and point of view, I enjoyed the listening but something kept me from loving it. I'll see what's the final take once I've sat with it.
