Jennifer Thorne

Jennifer Thorne is an American author of books for adults and young readers who writes from a nineteenth-century Cotswold cottage in the medieval market town of Minchinhampton alongside her husband, two sons, and various other animals. Born in a small town in Tennessee, Jenn grew up bouncing between her parents’ homes in various other states and countries, with books as her constant companions, before returning to New York as a teen to study drama at NYU. Though acting had been her lifelong dream, she found that she was more fulfilled by writing performance vehicles for her friends than acting in them herself. After a move to Los Angeles, she detoured into writing and never looked back. Connect with her online at jenniferthorne.com; Facebook: @JennMarieThorne; Instagram: @jennmariethorne.

What our readers think

Readers find this title a wonderful, original, and intelligent ghost story with spooky and witty elements. The family dynamics and characters may be divisive, but the unpredictable ending and comical aspects make it a page-turner. Despite some flaws, the book is highly recommended for its unique take on haunted house tales and relatable main character.

While I appreciate that the story doesn't end in the usual place, I do think it drags for a few chapters after that logical conclusion is reached.

It was a nice little twist to a haunting. I enjoyed the calm after the storm at the end of the book.

A lot of dysfunctional family drama. But the ending climax had me hooked.

One of the best books I've read in a long time, and maybe my favorite ending ever. Spooky, smart, at times funny. A definite page turner. You will not be disappointed.

I truly enjoyed the 'black sheep of the family's point of view during a haunting. The main character becomes more unhinged as the haunting continues and it's comical.

    audiobook. Narration was OK.

This book was bad. I was rooting for the evil ghosts in the book so bad. The family is so toxic and miserable and despicable towards each other, it was literally unbelievable. I know some toxic families, and these people were absolutely horrific. We're supposed to understand the MC is broken because she's the scapegoat in the family, but it's obvious to me SHE is the biggest problem. Everyone else has toxic traits, but she's a toxic person to everyone including the ghost! Nobody had an ounce of sense, and (minor spoiler) the whole family actually kill at least one person and get away with it, but somehow she's the victim in all this. When there is a final showdown, it's her lifetime of dealing with her toxic family that leads her to have the strength to defeat her foe, but really, it doesnt' make any sense. Total character shift out of nowhere. Also, her vanity is mind blowing. She's the sexyiest, smartest, most clever, chicest woman in any room-according to everyone else and everyone is jealous of her-including the ghost.
This felt like someone's therapy fantasy, which would be ok if it wasn't written like it was from a narcissistic spiteful brat. Stay haunted. I was genuinely rooting for the ghost, who actually had been done wrong.

    2. 5-3 stars. Fun little read with a historical ghost haunting a dysfunctional family in Italy. I liked all the creepy characters in the family and near and dear to the main character. Funny at times.

I’d give this 3.5 stars if I could. There are two stories here trying to occupy the same book, and the result is messy. Story One is a comedy about a stereotypical American family so determined to have a good vacation they ignore the fact that they’re in a haunted house. Story Two is about a ghost choosing to haunt the wrong person—a sociopath who feels far more annoyance than fear at her dead stowaway. The two stories don’t really fit in the same book, but for someone who appreciates a slow build, a very dry sense of humor, and an atypical ghost story, it might work.

Unlike any other haunted house story that I have read. The main character is a lot of fun. The family dynamics are wild and the horror is just right. Definitely recommending this one to everyone!

Wonderful book. A ghost story that was absolutely different and kept my attention thorough. The main character is relatable in her flaws and her strengths . The end is not what one expects. The narrator also has a great voice and suits the narration well. Definitely recommend this book to listen or read.
