About this audiobook

Winner of the 2014 Audie Award for Fiction and Finalist for Solo Narration—Male

From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times)—also a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!

Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a great follow-up to The Shining, with moments that are both terrifying and heartwarming. The book retains the atmosphere of the original and Stephen King's storytelling shines through. The audiobook narration by Will Patton is highly praised for bringing the story to life. Some readers appreciate the addition of personal experiences and the exploration of Dan Torrance's life. While not as good as The Shining for some, it is still a solid and satisfying sequel. Overall, readers love this book and consider it a winner.

It had been a while since I had read a Stephen King novel. As always, I enjoyed the story a great deal. King has a way of writing and building characters that is second to none, and I can't recall ever reading his work and not coming away entertained. This novel is a sequel of sorts to his famous book The Shining, but it certainly stands along as its own story. I cannot say much that has not already been said about this book, but I would recommend it and I think that it shows King has not lost a step.

The Shining is an AMAZING story. Perfectly creepy. This book doesn't come anywhere near it, unfortunately. I'd hoped to be getting something similar but this just fell flat. Good story idea but it just didn't have whatever it is that made Kings earlier books so damn good.

I enjoyed this very much. Related to it in ways I wish I didn’t, and I’m not referring to any tendencies towards violence or abilities to “shine.” Anyway, I loved the story and it had some real creepy moments in it and very much had the feel of the first book. I recommend reading with your ears or eyes, either way, just get into your brain.

Usually, when I watch a movie before I read the book, I’m always flabbergasted by the enormous differences between what gets cut out or just add in stuff that doesn’t even exist in the book exist in the movie and stuff that exist in the movie that doesn’t exist in the book Like reading the book 1st.

Now with that being said this book was awesome way better than the movie. It has so much more content than the movie does don’t get me wrong. The movie was very good. Dr sleep was a very good movie but the book and I think that you guys would agree the books are always better, in this case, the book was definitely better than the movie. The movie was good. Giving away any spoilers of course if you’ve never read the shining read that book 1st is it the first book in this double feature. There’s also a movie of the shining starring Jack Nicholas And again the book is way better than the movie. In fact the movie was terrible. I used to like the movie until I read the book. I would highly recommend anybody even if you watch the movie to read this book because it is awesome. The narrator was very good, I was not bored for a single minute so definitely read this book. You will not be disappointed, especially if you enjoyed the shining because this is a sequel to it and it kind of shows it goes on from where it stopped shining and it carries on very nicely. It’s not confusing even a person who has never read and or seen the shining Could still read this book and get a rudimentary understanding of what transpired in the shining you won’t get all the details obviously so if you haven’t read the shining or you don’t even know that the shining is part of this the shining first I always recommend read the shining first then read Dr sleep then watch the movies But he already watched the movies everybody’s watched the shining, as it’s been out since the early 80s or late 70s but relatively new so they’re still could be people who haven’t seen that movie yet so if you haven’t seen the movie and you want to hold off on it read the book or listen to it Enjoyed buying the book and then I listen to it and I follow along that fundamental reading skills. I do reading in front of lots of people I can’t be up there stuttering. That definitely would not look good so I usually will read at home real books, but my job. I don’t like taking my books to my job Because they end up getting turned into minced meat. And I love my books I have every Stephen King book he has ever written both in his real name and his fake name is my favourite author. I mean, let’s face it. He’s been writing books right I think Terry was his first book and that came out in the early 70s since then, he has written over 100 novels and pretty much everyone of them went to number one and the New York Times best seller as well as other best seller list the real deal if you enjoy whore, but with characters that have substance. Because most horror, movies and horror books, they don’t really go into a whole lot of character development. King doesn’t King great character development detail. He leaves Easter eggs all through his books that other books together that you would never think would be tied together, kinda like read between the lines he leaves Easter eggs, eggs, and every single book right he has such a unique style that I think that I just picked up a book and it had a blank cover and I just started reading it. I would know with Stephen King probably by the time I finish the first paragraph writing style is unique to that no one writes like him was you like him or don’t like him you can’t say sucks you can but he doesn’t like authors. I don’t really care, but I don’t say they suck because there’s like millions and millions of copies of their novel they sold so obviously they don’t suck. They just suck to myself. But I definitely highly recommend this book and every other Stephen King book and this app has every Stephen King book available pretty much on audio and on e-book pretty much all of them not quite but pretty much. This is the best streaming services for books that exists in my opinion I like Audible because you get your credit every month and you get to keep that book. But in the meantime, this app has so many great books and they let you read all of them. You know it’s not that expensive. I’m just doing it until I work up my collection on Audible and then I’m gonna cancel my subscription to this, but that’s gonna be a long time because there’s always new books coming out that I want, and sometimes I can’t afford them or you’re in between credits on Audible. This is just a fantastic streaming service. I mean you go to some of the other ones you may get some and what you like but this one has everything that I like especially Stephen King read this book. You will not be disappointed. I promise you that if you were Stephen King and you liked the shining, you will like this even more because it was actually better, the sequel did better than original

Incredible follow up to The Shining that really honors it without just rehashing the story. Some moments are terrifying and others are heartwarming. One of King's great ones

Pretty good, as a recovered alcoholic I liked the part King added about his own experiences with that. Kind of missed that in most of his novels, even though some of the characters in the past had a history. Not sure though, if I needed an update on Dan Torrance. But sure, why not. Solid story.

Good book. Terrible recording. There were several parts where the story cuts off and starts at a different place. I dont know if it’s bad editing or what. Also, every time I would close the app and come back the book would be in a different place than where I left off.
