About this audiobook
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a disturbing and gruesome horror story. The book is well-written and atmospheric, with vivid descriptions that evoke strong emotions. Some readers were uncomfortable with the graphic animal torture scenes, while others found them to be a highlight of the book. The characters and story are well-developed, and the narration is excellent. Overall, this book is not for the faint of heart, but it is a must-read for fans of intense and creepy horror.

The premise of the book made it an ideal read for me: isolated location, interesting protagonists and slow paced. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real effort to finish listening to it. Honestly, although the very detailed description throughout the book are meant to drawn you in into what is happening in a given moment, I really think that they were a little too drown out at times: not every single description has to be 20 never-ending minutes of words, when a paragraph would have probably been enough.1 person found this helpful

There needs to be a warning so that readers understand the book contains STRONG body horror and and an incident of animal abuse. I personally would have appreciated a heads up about the animal abuse but I was able to skip through that part. Keeping those things in mind it was a good book. The characters were strong and very believable. The premise was as well. It does require a strong constitution though. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Does a great job at unsettling you and grossing you out, the story is simple and creepy but gets the job done well enough. My only complaint really is that most of these kids are just absolutely awful people and it's really hard to root for anyone but in the end the characters are all written very well and this was a great read, especially for the halloween season! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Goodness, this was some story! It was gruesome. It was violent. But maybe most scariest of all, it was believable. I unfortunately, could see something like this happening today. I really enjoyed the added newspaper and courtroom transcripts that were spaced between the chapters. It really helped to add to the story and stitch some of the pieces of the story together. Each character had ample backstory to let the reader know who they were, but the added information that come from the story and the interspersed documents really kept you on your toes and kept you wondering if you really did have the characters figured out. Overall I thought this was a pretty good horror story. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

The Troop is a nice story that manages to grip the reader, but it relies heavily on visual horror rather than allowing the reader's imagination to take the lead. While this approach creates some striking and memorable scenes, I believe the story could have benefited from a title that better captures its essence. Despite these aspects, certain parts of the narrative delve into deeper meanings, adding layers that make the story more thought-provoking.Overall, it's a decent read with moments that stand out, but it left me wishing for a more imaginative horror experience. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

An allegory for Covid; a mix of The Strain, The Crazies and A Few Good Men; trigger warning for animal cruelty; gory; the words and thoughts of the boys are entertaining; the metaphors are simple; overall, a fun, fast read - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

John Carpenter's The Thing meets Lord of the Flies. This book shook me to my core from start to finish. Cutter's writing of the grotesques and horrors the Troop faces on the island is nothing I've ever read before. A must-read for any horror buff! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

The Troop is a beautifully written, original story with excellent narration, and is well worth the listen. My Only qualm is that it was never exactly “scary” to me. Gross? Yes. Disturbing? Very. Creepy? You bet. But scary… nah.
This was more like ultra descriptive “body horror” and is reminiscent of 80’s/90’s Stephen King (though the writing supersedes anything SK has ever done) and would almost be better categorized as sci-fi/horror.
I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to horror, and unless the story wakes up the ol’ existential dread, or leaves me with a fear Ive never sat alone with before, I’m rarely ever truly impressed.
This is a fantastic story that you should most certainly listen to, but it definitely has a major science fiction lean and is NOT for those who are sensitive to extremely graphic descriptions of physical violence, animal abuse, and gross bodily harm.

This book was effed up. I finally found a book that people said, "It's disturbing," and it actually was.
A scount master takes five scounts to a local island for the annual weekend camping trip. The scout master is just done, and the kids are just the worst.
Without spoiling, the scout master made bad decision after bad decision, one scount qas very into testing his limits with adults, anf another had anger issues... This is just thenperfect storm for bad things. I've never had a desire to read Lord of the Flies, and this just solidified that lack of want.
Very good (bad) book; check your trigger warnings. There were things I was prepared for that I was still not prepared for. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5
