About this audiobook

A recurrent, unidentifiable noise in her apartment. A memo to her boss that's replaced by obscene insults. Amanda—a successful architect in a happy marriage—finds her life going off kilter by degrees. She starts smoking again, and one night for no reason, without even the knowledge that she's doing it, she burns her husband with a cigarette. At night she dreams of a beautiful woman with pointed teeth on the shore of a blood–red sea.

The new voice in Amanda's head, the one that tells her to steal things and talk to strange men in bars, is strange and frightening, and Amanda struggles to wrest back control of her life. Is she possessed by a demon, or is she simply insane?

The performance was really good, but the story lacked tension past the first few chapters. If you want a story with a slow, creeping sense of dread, of an unreliable narrator further losing their grip on reality, read The Haunting of Hill House. If you want an unsettling possession story, read the Exorcist. This is a good story to listen to while at the beach, typing at work, or passing the time, but it never seems to realize its horrific potential.

I enjoyed this dark little story. It was decently written and went at a good clip, with no dragging on. Kept it creepy and even had me saying, "oh, my, god!" a couple of times when there were a few really evil things she did. Quick and fun and even a little funny sometimes. If you want a creepy little ghost story that doesn't take a million years to get through, this is a goodie.
I might be giving it more credit than it deserves, but I thought it was an interesting take on how difficult it is for women to take up space and when we do, we are a hazard to the children and "perfect" men in our lives. She was enjoying not being little miss perfect most of the time and she saw the rot in her tidy life, but to not want it could only be explained by demonic possession, right? As far as the truly unhinged she did, I got a whiff of American Psycho-minus the misogyny wondering if it was all real of if that was how she saw herself.
In any event, you don't have to read anything deep into the story to enjoy this dark ghosty story that serviced the tale well.

Such a quick, fast-paced read! I love an unreliable main character and a character-driven plot. I heard from a lot of readers that this was a really scary novella. Maybe I read a good amount of horror books, but this wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. There were definitely some gory and eerie elements as well as some shovlck factors that capture my attention, but I felt so-so to me. However, this would make a good intro book to the horror genre.

I love the idea of a book about possession being written and told through the pov of the victim makes the book extremely interesting and freaky. Now we need a book written from the pov in 3rd person.

A quick easy novella that kept my attention, but was extremely tropey and predictable. If you haven't read or watched much horror this would make a great introduction to the genre.

    Wow!!!!!!

So she was a little crazy to laugh this shit off. I'm not even religious (anymore) and I would have been running to my nearest spiritualist or priest. It sucks because it literally ruined her life. Successful career, job . . . just ruined. But see, the first sign of me losing control would have triggered me.

    This was creepy but good.

Amanda has strange reactions; Amanda hears strange noises; Amanda has strange dreams with a woman in a blood-red sea; Amanda starts to act strangely; Amanda begins to lose control over her own body...
This book tells us the story of a woman who is being harassed and possessed by a demon. Narrated in the first person, it provides a personal experience. However, it left me wanting more. I'm going to mention a couple of things that could be considered spoilers but don't contain plot details, just a warning. As for horror, I liked it a lot; the images and frightening scenes are very well done, and I enjoyed them. But in terms of story development, I wasn't completely convinced, and I didn't like the ending. At no point did I feel that the protagonist fought against the demon; she only made a few attempts and that was it, she didn't react. I don't know, it just didn't convince me fully. However, it is still super gripping, and the narration is very good. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Even so, if you like horror, I recommend it; it reads very quickly and is interesting.
