About this audiobook

On the deck of his ice-imprisoned ship, explorer Robert Walton watches from a great distance as an enormous apparition travels with much haste across the frozen shore. The next day, Walton fishes from the sea a melancholy scientist named Frankenstein, who shares with Walton the horrifying account of his life and of the "hideous progeny" he set loose upon the world. Frankenstein was written while 19-year-old Mary Shelley vacationed in Geneva with poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. An incessantly rainy summer prompted Byron to challenge the members of the party to write a tale of the supernatural. While listening to a discussion concerning the theory of electrical reanimation, Mary Shelley was struck, almost to terror, with the idea for Frankenstein: "The idea so possessed my mind that a thrill of fear ran through me, and I wished to exchange the ghastly image of my fancy for the realities around ." A universal classic, Mary Shelley's romantic tale of an ambitious doctor who places himself in the dangerous role of God was first published anonymously in 1818. Master narrator George Guidall skillfully brings to life the doctor and his unhappy creation.

Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley (Londres, 1797-1851).

What makes this book as great as it is is its atmosphere, subtlety, and imagination. Mary Shelley was truly ahead of her time, and should continue being celebrated among the truly great authors of all time, let alone female authors.

George Guidall's reading of this chilling classic is absolutely remarkable. (This is, by the way, the 1831 version of the novel). The voice he gives each character, especially the monster, brings them to life, makes them real... Utterly epic!

I’m 46 years old and have never read Frankenstein. My daughter encouraged me to read it and I’m so glad she did! It’s not what I expected and so much better. It is very well written and full of good morals and life lessons. I really think Frankenstein should be a book more often read in school. I enjoyed this specific audiobook because the narrator did a fantastic job.

Beautifully written, fantastic narration but a bit too long and could have ended sooner. Still a classic and applicable to today’s society where so many believe they are and are left out leading to feelings of loneliness, sadness depression and anger.

As many do, I only knew about Dr. Frankenstein and his monster from popular, contemporary depictions. None of that is in here. What is here is a dark tale of the pursuit for companionship and acceptance. It struck me as remarkably relevant to our days as a social commentary. Beautifully written, this chilling, at times heartwrenching classic proved to be far more intriguing and profound than I anticipated.

An absolute classic. It has its minor flaws, but those are easily forgiven when You understand that it was written more than a century ago by a teenager. Under that light, the concept of the story is unperishable.

The true story of Dr. Victor Frankenstein.

Nothing like what they teach in movies, or the stories that have been told about the monster. Nothing of "IT'S ALIIIIVVVVEE" in a basement laboratory...

It's how the Dr. lives after having brought a creature to life, which only needed a human being.

The two perspectives of the protagonists make it so that, on one hand, you understand them, but on the other hand, you punish them. (Translated from Spanish)

No, it is not a science fiction or horror book. It is a deep reflection on the scope of human creativity and intelligence, raising various moral challenges to scientific progress and human morality. That is how it should be read. (Translated from Spanish)

It is a fascinating book that speaks to you, where the narration enables a journey through emotions and especially allows for a lot of empathy in many of the moments narrated with the character, where part of the innocence is glimpsed and how that "being" created transforms.
And this book allows for the display of: passion, curiosity, loneliness, feelings of guilt, the limits we set for ourselves out of fear, ethics, listening, time, observation, gestures of kindness (this is beautiful), judging by appearance, prejudices, rejection when something or someone does not fit into my reality and what one constructs from it, the need to belong, anger, the loss of sensitivity towards the other person, avoiding showing vulnerability, and above all, not taking responsibility for the decisions made. When I read it, it became one of my favorite books. I think the character of Frankenstein's monster has become an iconic character of Halloween and horror movies, which creates some reluctance to read the book (at least that happened to me).
I was very wrong; it is a beautiful book that talks about humanity, morality, marginalization, etc.
I consider it a kind of social critique that can still be used today; in the end, the true monsters are the people who turn their backs on what seems different to them or on what we reject for various reasons. (Translated from Spanish)

An adventurous sailor finds himself in the Arctic ice with a mysterious man, Victor Frankenstein, who tells him how his ambition led him to give life to a being made from parts of corpses; unable to bear the monstrosity of his creation, he cowardly abandoned it, which determined the tragic fate of both. It is a lively read and definitely worth it, another classic that never fails. For all ages, if I had read this at 12 years old, I would have loved the literal story of the monster, but at 34 years old, I also see a story about ambition and its consequences, about playing God, about the ethical limits of scientific progress, about a father who does not take responsibility for his child, and about how we ourselves create monsters or how the true monster can be within us. In short, read it! (Translated from Spanish)

Never let Hollywood dictate how a book should be.
This is the best example: Frankenstein is a wonderful book within the universal classics, and I took a long time to read it thinking that I was going to read a children's horror story or the script of that abominable black-and-white movie from the 30s.
This book has an impressive charm, where Dr. Victor Frankenstein constantly reflects on metaphysical thoughts about life, wanting to study, specialize, and be one of the best scientists. An interesting point is knowing that the story mainly takes place in Switzerland. And as the doctor achieves one of his most important scientific breakthroughs, that's when a whole rollercoaster of events begins.
The most shocking thing is that the great writer Mary Shelley wrote this book at the age of 18 as part of a challenge from a friend who posed to his guests (all artists) who could write the most impactful horror work. (Translated from Spanish)

October literary challenge, a book I have abandoned.

Now I wonder how it is that I always put it off, after believing that I already knew it because I had seen the film adaptations, but that is not the case, nothing is like in the book, this book that is brilliantly wonderful. A classic that must be read no matter what. (Translated from Spanish)

This reading was incredible, I recommend it despite the preconceived and mistaken ideas one has about the original story due to the movies that adapted it. The way Mary Shelley masterfully writes and constructs characters is wonderful, addictive, and surpasses everything; that's why it's a classic of universal literature that will always be a reference for readers, due to the themes she developed, which today are more relevant than ever. To name a few: man as a social being, loneliness, the limits of science, the responsibility of your actions (it's not just about creating or doing for the sake of it; it's about foreseeing the consequences and being responsible for them), regrets, cowardice, accepting what is different, justice as revenge, and the big question: is a monster born, or do we create it as a society through education, laws, and our actions? The book surprised me; I expected to find a horror and science fiction story centered around the terrifying being created in a laboratory, but instead, I found a work that invites reflection on family, family values, and the weight of the decisions made in life: the doctor's blind ambition led him down a fatal path, acting without considering the consequences of his actions, turning the monster into both victim and perpetrator. ⭐Excellent Classic⭐
Even if one is an avid reader from childhood, many times one gets carried away by movies and finds it hard to read the books they are based on, assuming they are similar, and then when you do, perhaps with fear, you end up realizing how wrong you were.
A spectacular work, nothing like the different cinematic versions; I don’t need to say what it’s about because more or less it’s known. The only thing I can tell you is to read it well, without fear. (Translated from Spanish)

Wow, what a wonderful classic. There are so many versions of this classic, and none resemble the original book. In this novel, Mary reveals the true face of humanity. We have Victor, the creator of the supposed "Monster," who continues to play the victim instead of taking responsibility for his actions, and on the other hand, we have society that judges without knowing. I highly recommend this classic; don’t settle for the new versions that exist, as they are far from what the true story of the "Frankenstein Monster" really is. (Translated from Spanish)
