About this audiobook

"Alex Jennings' impeccable accent keeps the already propulsive novel quite engaging, and moving like a steam train about to run you over."—Vulture

"Narrator Alex Jennings offers a sparkling performance, providing layered character portraits and enlivening the story with British, American, and Greek accents...listeners who enjoy whodunits and closed-circle mysteries will want to pick this one up."—Library Journal

"Jennings confidently, confidentially embodies [the ensemble]: elegant Lara, gruff Jason, earnest Leo, biting Kate, protective Agathi, unassuming Nikos. Elliott, of course, gets star billing . . . and Jennings ensures his twists, pivots, and falsehoods are marvelously played out to the didn’t-see-that-coming final scene. The please oh-please pièce de resistance would be to put Jennings on screen in the inevitable celluloid adaptation to come."—Booklist

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex–movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder — from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books.

Editor's Note

Furious winds of change…

The author of “The Silent Patient” is back with a thriller starring a former actress, a group of her friends who spend a holiday on her private island, a ferocious wind that spoils the fun (the titular “fury”), and of course, a mysterious death. Combining elements of Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” and classical Greek tragedies, Michaelides slowly builds toward the big reveal. (Be warned: This story does include a spoiler for his aforementioned title, the ever-popular “The Silent Patient.”)

Elliot was a truly detestable narrator, but all of the characters weren't exactly likable, so I guess that shouldn't come as a surprise. I liked the writing and the plot even if I didn't enjoy the characters. And I really loved how atmospheric the setting was, how I could really picture being on the island.

wow i really loved this book! a perfect 4.
other reviews say ‘The Fury’ is not Alex’s strongest soldier, but i did not mind one bit, it made me excited to pick up the other works by Michaelides! once i sat down to really listen (since i audiobooked this read), i was absolutely hooked! i love thrillers that really engage the inner workings of the psychology the characters & this book definitely did.
i love how at every point in the story, i could not confidently say who the main antagonist was going to be in the end!
i enjoyed the semi slow pacing, & how dramatic the story was. the narration’s embellishments & attention to detail for furthering the characters’ depth was so satisfying. it held the same energy for me as i felt while reading Tart’s “A Secret History” in the way that i could feel the impending doom— masterfully crafted.

The Fury by Alex Michaelides is a book for fans of Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone and the Hawthorne & Horowitz series.

I liked that I wasn't totally sure where the plot was going, and I think the narrator, Alex Jennings, is well cast. And I love the cover, featuring an Evil Eye laid over an island backdrop.

But personally, I was hoping for more of a remote island, lives of the rich and famous feel. Instead this one's more of a, pull-up-a-barstool and hang out next to a meandering narrator, feel.

More than anything though, I was let down by the ending to this one. It just wasn't for me.

I kind of hated this book. All the characters were annoying and the storyline was just a bunch of rich friends on island. The narrator of the book, his character, is bloody annoying. I just didn’t have the interest, energy or time to finish this one. I don’t think this was one of the authors best books. Nothing like the first.

When love turns into obsession, when you bury your childhood sorrows so deep, when you think it's just about moving on and want to cover the past with a finger without first addressing it, at some point, everything explodes!!! (Translated from Spanish)

The fury has left me perplexed. With a fun and bold start in the exposition of the plot and in the literary language, it slows down as you progress through the reading to reach a predictable and weak ending. Still, in its early pages, it reminded me of Terenci Moix from his most sarcastic books. (Translated from Spanish)
