About this audiobook

A haunting thriller” (PopSugar) about a woman who believes that she has a connection to a decades old kidnapping and begins a frantic investigation to find out what really happened when the victim goes missing again.

When Fern Douglas sees the news about Astrid Sullivan, a thirty-four-year-old missing woman from Maine, she is positive that she knows her. Fern’s husband is sure it’s because of Astrid’s famous kidnapping—and equally famous return—twenty years ago, but Fern has no memory of that, even though it happened an hour outside her New Hampshire hometown. And when Astrid appears in Fern’s recurring nightmare, one in which a girl reaches out to her, pleading, Fern fears that it’s not a dream at all, but a memory.

Returning to her childhood home to help her father pack for a move, Fern purchases a copy of Astrid’s recently published memoir—which may have provoked her original kidnapper to abduct her again—and as she reads through its chapters and visits the people and places within it, she discovers more evidence that she has an unsettling connection to the missing woman. With the help of her psychologist father, Fern digs deeper, hoping to find evidence that her connection to Astrid can help the police locate her. But when Fern discovers more about her own past than she ever bargained for, the disturbing truth will change both of their lives forever in this “masterful meditation on fear” (Mindy Mejia, author of Strike Me Down).

I kept listening just so that I could confirm that the solution I formulated in the first chapter was in fact the answer. Literally zero surprises. One character in text describes it as 'mind-boggling' that the MC doesn't work it out sooner and I fully agree. I wish, for empathy's sake, that I could describe her as anything other than a total drip, but I can't. The other woman in the story would have been a thousand times a more interesting character to focus on, and it's kind of amazing the text allows itself to make such a direct comparison between the two: it makes starkly obvious how lame the actual MC is.

ETA: Dropped to one star after finishing. The protagonist is so painfully myopic, unnuanced, and annoying I genuinely wish it had ended with her murder.

A very predictable book. I had a hard time believing the ending and found it too theatrical.

The protagonist was whiney and not the brightest bulb. At one point in the book someone tells her that she really needs to “grow up” and I agreed. Idk maybe she’s written that way for a reason but it didn’t really come off that well. Pretty good story I guess. The narrator has a breathy voice like she’s loud-whispering which can kind of get annoying. If you skip this one you aren’t missing anything.

Started out pretty good but just got too explicit for
Me. I equally don’t want to hear about people’s sexual escapades. I just wanted to hear a good mystery. So I will move onto something new.

A little too far-fetched with how Fern’s parents behaved.

Ridiculous. Takes itself much too seriously and protagonist is an idiot.

The story is gripping as Mara struggles to grapple with reality... the ending isn’t quite what you would expect as the story doesn’t follow typical thriller tropes... I really appreciated that!!

Meh. I guessed every “twist” from the beginning except I thought the main surprise was so obvious it must be a red herring. It wasn’t. Most of the characters act in unbelievable ways. I’d pass
